Scott Walker's certainly wrong about the dangers of business uncertainty

Risky, but goodRisky, but goodI'm back a third time to talk about the currently fashionable Republican notion (at least, fashionable among Republicans) that reducing business uncertainty is the only real way to fix America's economic woes. Sorry if I seem tiresome and pedantic on this issue, but I really do think it's important and instructive in many ways. This time, I present yet another reason why Scott Walker is certainly wrong about uncertainty

This idea of uncertainty holding back job creatjion is, as I've noted, one that has been adopted wholesale by Walker, as when he commented on the state Department of Revenue's decision to slam small "roll your own" cigaret shops:

"What we hear from employers all the time … is they want the certainty of knowing what the law is, what the rules are, that they're applied universally and across the board."

Brown Signs Bills to Move Ballot Measures to Novembers & Online Voter Reg

Measure would put signature initiatives on November elections

by Brian Leubitz

First, let's say one thing, SB 202 is not a simple stroke of genius that makes initiatives all of a sudden a great system. But, it is a fair reform that lets the full electorate vote on important measures.

In short, SB 202 moves all future (so doesn't apply to measures already qualified for the ballot) initiatives placed on the ballot through signatures to general elections.  In other words, gubernatorial and presidential elections.

Of course, the Right is pretty livid about this, as this June was going to be their dream election to put a bunch of right-wing crap on the ballot. With low turnout on the Democratic side, we would basically have the electorate of Arizona or something.

You can read Governor Brown's signing message for SB 202 here or below the fold.  He refers to a rainy day fund measure that will be on the ballot that is moved by SB 202, in the context of wanting to avoid putting additional money into a bank account when we are broke.  (Makes sense, huh?)

In other news, the Governor also approved finally allowing people to register to vote online. Which, if you think about it makes perfect sense. So, apparently Jerry has some of that common sense thing. Hooray!

Moving Planet Virginia a Big Success!

On Sept. 24th, the Sierra Club joined 350.org, thousands of activists and millions of people around the globe in "Moving Planet" events. Moving Planet was a worldwide rally to demand solutions to the climate crisis - a single day to move away from fossil fuels with clean energy solutions like Virginia's offshore wind power!

Virginians came on bikes, on skates, on boards, and on foot - all anxious to be part of something huge and fun, and helpful in getting our planet moving on the climate crisis.

In Alexandria, the day's festivities celebrated the fact that in September, plans were announced to retire the GenOn coal-fired power plant located in Alexandria by October of next year.

In Fairfax, activists pushed for more transportation choices to move us beyond oil.

Richmond activists rallied in front of Dominion Virginia Power's HQ before marching to Virginia's General Assembly building.

And in Virginia Beach, bicycles rode along the oceanfront boardwalk between symbols of our soon-to-be dirty energy past (a mock oil spill) to our clean energy future (model wind turbines).

On the flip, check out some great photos, media clips and video documenting the successful day.

4 US Attorneys Announce that they are going after California Marijuana Industry

by Brian Leubitz

Remember when Eric Holder said that the US Department of Justice wasn't going to spend a lot of time investigating medical marijuana, but that they would spend time on distributors? Turns out the later overrules the former:

Federal prosecutors in California announced a series of actions Friday targeting what they characterized as the "large, for-profit marijuana industry" that has developed since the state legalized medical marijuana for select patients 15 years ago.

Four U.S. attorneys -- Benjamin Wanger, Andre Birotte Jr., Laura Duffy and Melinda Haag -- detailed in a joint press release steps they had taken in conjunction with federal law enforcement and local officials in California. (CNN)

I honestly don't understand why the Administration would make this a priority? Does somebody thing this will win any votes? Will some vast amount of lives be saved? Sure, there probably is a bit of corruption in the industry, but nothing a formal recognition of the industry couldn't solve.  It's time to give up this ridiculous war on marijuana and move on to focus on that war on poverty we never really won.

I can't really say it any better than Asm.

Herman Cain & Clarence Thomas are not THUR-good!

October 7, 2011 by Left in Alabama

When I was campaigning for Barack Obama (then Senator), I encountered very few opponents. However, I notice that most people did not ask why I was campaigning for Obama. I soon found out the reason. Most people assumed I was campaigning for Obama because he is black and I am black. However, nothing was further from the truth. During 2008 I saw report after report detailing how most African Americans were voting for Obama because he was black. However; if you look back in history, anyone can see how this is false.

It is true that Barack Obama rallied many new Black voters. However, they did not vote for him just because he is black. Barack Obama carried 95% of the Black Vote because he was "Black and Qualified". Anyone that suggest African Americans will just vote for the "black guy" possesses hostile social attitudes. This suggests Black Voters cannot think for themselves. This suggests Black Voters do not watch the news or know what is going on around them. This is racial slap in the face. Now we have proof of this.

State Sen. Trip Pittman (R) Puts Best Face on Federal Subpoena

October 7, 2011 by Left in Alabama

Trip Pittman's spot of oil spill profiteering has netted him a federal subpoena, but he's putting on a happy face ...

“They always say in an investigation you don’t want to be the one left out, so I have been served, and I feel better now,” Pittman, R-Montrose, said Wednesday. “I went through the bingo situation (in Montgomery) with all those subpoenas flying around. I actually was subpoenaed. That was the first federal subpoena I had ever gotten. I was pretty nervous about it. But when you want to worry is when you don’t get a federal subpoena.”

If a subpoena makes him feel so good, imagine what an indictment would do.  The subpoena is actually for documents at Pittman's tractor company, which got $639,000 from an oil spill cleanup fund that was partially overseen by Pittman.

Van Hollen's boot-licking response to NRA: 'I'm making it as easy as I can'

Wisconsin's attorney general, J.B. Van Hollen, sure knows how to talk tough.  The National Rifle Association criticized his department this week, saying it was drafting rules for concealed carry training that were too strict, required four hours of training and included firing a weapon. (Imagine that!)

Van Hollen's weak-kneed response:

"I'm surprised the NRA isn't grateful," Van Hollen said. "We're making it as easy as possible."

The rules don't require any hands-on practice as [the NRA's Chris] Cox believes, the attorney general said.

So, not to worry.  You won't actually have to handle or fire a weapon in order to get a permit to carry one.  (You might be a little surprised at how much noise it makes if you ever pull the trigger.)  Presumably, the four hours of training will include information on which way to point it and which end the bullet comes out.

Poor? Unemployed? It's Your Own Damned Fault!

October 7, 2011 by Left in Alabama

Republican frontrunner Herman Cain:

"If you don't have a job and you are not rich, blame yourself!"

I'm tempted to say something about so-called compassionate conservatism here, but I'll content myself with asking why the hell is it that the free market gods (otherwise known as "job creators") get all the credit for any economic good news, but presto change-o, when there are 5 applicants for every job and real wages for workers haven't increased since 1975, when all the economic gains of the past 30 years have gone to the super-rich, why the hell do Republicans then turn around and blame it on the workers?  It makes no sense to give the "job creators" a get out of jail free card when things turn to crap and it's positively mean-spirited to tell unemployed and underemplyed workers in this economy that it's their own damned fault.

Second VA Energy Conference: a time to spotlight the desire for renewables

October 7, 2011 by ArticleXI

Original Author:

The Virginia Sierra Club recently announced its intentions to attend the second Virginia Energy Conference, held by our dirty energy-loving governor, Bob McDonnell. The conference will be held on October 17-19 and anyone in favor of clean, renewable sources of energy for VA are encouraged to attend.

For all of his promises to the contrary, Gov. McDonnell has focused his administrations attention on bolstering VA's coal, gas, oil, and nuclear commitments to the exclusion of renewables.

We can of course discuss the political cronyism that's obviously taking place, but the more important issues are the human and environmental ramifications that a continued reliance on nonrenewable sources of energy will have in VA.

First, committing to more "domestic" sources of nonrenewable energy will almost inevitably mean higher rates of diseases and illnesses related to the increased domestic production of nonrenewable energy. That is, more Virginians will become sick or die.

Secondly, Virginia's various and invaluable ecosystems will take unparalleled "shocks" that may lead to their irreversible decline.

Republicans Answer President Obama's Jobs Challenge!

October 7, 2011 by Left in Alabama

During his press conference yesterday, President Obama challenged the GOP to present alternative ideas for job creation.  The President said they have yet to do so.  Oh please.  Tell the truth, Mr. President!  The GOP is FULL of crap job-creation ideas.  Have you forgotten these gems? Brother can you spare a job? GOP job creation ideas

Right here in Alabama, Scott Beason & Micky Hammon sponsored a bill to solve unemployment by kicking out all the undocumented workers.  So... so it didn't work that well.  But that's because Scott Beason is lazier than we realized.

In Washington, Republican Congressmen think repealing health care reform will put "800,000 people" back to work.

Eric-Griego-2-cropped-proto-custom_6 This is a guest blog by Eric Griego, candidate for Congress in the NM-1 Democratic primary.

A growing movement of ordinary Americans from all walks of life are marching peacefully in communities throughout the nation to send this message to Washington and Wall Street: We’re fed up with Wall Street greed and Washington inaction on jobs. We need jobs, not cuts, and policies that benefit 99% of Americans instead of only the top 1%. This movement has the potential to change the debate in Washington –- but only if we all stand together.

Today, I stand in solidarity with the 99% and ask you to do the same.

Duffy's DumbAxe

Sean Duffy ran his campaign using commercials claiming he had a lumberjack heritage and he was going to take an axe to Washington DC. What he didn't tell us was that Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid were on his axe-list. He voted for the Paul Ryan budget and now we are going to vote him out of the Wisconsin 7th Congressional District.

Sean has had so many blunders since he's taken office and that's even if you are not counting his votes. He claims he can't make it on his $174,000 salary.

Please watch the video we've made to see how we think he should make his next lumberjack commercials. Link to it as much as you can. We are aiming to get 5000 hits on this video so we can show up right next to Duffy's advertisements that he pays thousands of dollars for. Let's work on getting this Real Fake Repuglican out of office. -saw-

He is going up against Vern Buchanan, a guy who is more notorious for his corruption and graft than his Congressional record.

This is going to be one hell of a match.

I can’t wait.

Anti-Immigrant “Progressives” Target Pregnant Women of Color at Conference

Red Herring Bill Threatens Public Lands, Public Health & Jobs

Congressman John Garamendi
Today in America, 14 million people are out of work through no fault of their own, dragging our economy ever closer to another recession. The first priority of Congress should be to create jobs. The American Jobs Act, which would add nearly two million jobs to the economy, is being summarily dismissed by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, the GOP leadership asks us to consider absurd bills like H.R. 1505, which this week passed the House Committee on Natural Resources, where I sit as a Member.  This legislation will hand over control of all public lands within 100 miles of the borders - like our national parks, forests, and beaches - to U.S. Customs and Border Protections.  Ironically, it's named the National Security and Federal Lands Protection Act. Under H.R. 1505, without any public notice, U.S. Customs and Border Protection could build roads and gates and install surveillance equipment in places that Americans treasure - from Glacier National Park in Montana to Cleveland National Forest in California and Olympic National Park in Washington.

Question of the day

Is David Clarke running for something?

Or is he just in heat for publicity?

He has delusions of grandeur, once ran an embarrassingly bad campaign for mayor of Milwaukee.

He considered running for county executive when Scott Walker was elected governor, but the Republican bosses told him it was Jeff Stone's turn, so he backed off.

Chris Abele's up in April, and doesn't have an opponent.  It's a free ride for Clarke, but a loss could really hurt his standing.

Meanwhile, Clarke's always been a publicity hound, so he's loving the attention and happy to pick a fight every day, whether it's about the budget, guns, or illegal immigrants.  And the media just eat it up.

It may energize the right wing base, but he sounds a lot like someone who's off his meds.  And that could be a problem.
