Let’s Hear It For The 99-Percenters

(Cross-Posted at Dan Tilson’s Examiner.com page)

An interesting irony in the rapid growth of the “Occupy” & “We Are The 99%” movements nationwide, is that an awful lot of struggling folks are already part and parcel of these movements, whether they know it or like it or not.

To use a fancy phrase, these folks may be suffering from cognitive dissonance. In my online dictionary, here’s the definition: n. a state of psychological conflict or anxiety resulting from a contradiction between a person’s simultaneously held beliefs or attitudes

So, we have in our nation millions of mostly middle-aged and older people who’ve lost their jobs, health insurance, pensions, savings, and homes, thanks to a corporate-dominated economic agenda, electoral system and government.

Calling All Animal Lovers! PAC Formed to Push for Humane Legislation in Alabama

October 13, 2011 by Left in Alabama

Well darn... here's another place where Alabama is at the bottom of the rankings: our treatment of companion and farm animals.  Remember we're the state where top state officials lobby against making cockfighting a felony.  We can do better and a group has formed a political action committee to push for better legislation.

The Alabama Voters for Responsible Animal Legislation (AVRAL) is looking for supporters and contributions. It's a "grassroots, nonpartisan political action committee."

We are working to influence legislation and support the passage of policies favorable to the welfare of companion animals. We believe the current approach to animal welfare in Alabama is inefficient, too costly for taxpayers, and does little to address pressing animal welfare issues in this state, such as adoption/placement of homeless animals, pervasive cruelty and neglect, and the need for shelter reform.

Alabama Historian Wayne Flynt On HB56: "Meanest, Most Hateful Thing I've Ever Read"

October 13, 2011 by Left in Alabama

Wayne Flynt is a man who cares about the welfare of working class Alabamians as much - or more than - their middle class brethren. He's not a softie.  The author of "Poor But Proud: Alabama's Poor Whites" is not someone who stands by quietly while those people get treated unfairly.

Nor is he someone who'll stand quietly by while anyone is being denied their basic human dignity and their civil rights. His voice and vision carry weight: Flynt has this to say about Alabama's immigration law:

"This is the most mean-spirited, hateful thing I’ve ever read," he said.

Flynt said the chief argument for the bill — that illegal workers are taking jobs from Alabamians — is bogus.
[...]
He said the controversy will hurt efforts to recruit new jobs and industry to Alabama, where the economy is increasingly reliant on foreign direct investment.
[...]
The message, he said, "is that we only like immigrants if they come with car plants."
[...]
The irony, Flynt said, is that we are all a nation of immigrants.

Winner and Loser of the Day

Winner: Alan Grayson — Great fundraising numbers suggest that we may just see the leader back where we need him, in Congress, fighting on our behalf.

Loser: George LeMieux — Proving once again that he isn’t a serious policy person, he releases a “plan” to destroy the economy even further.

From The Spencerian:

Often it’s just the easiest sideways glance from my daughter, and I become overwhelmed with a sense of responsibility I fear I will one day be unable to manage. My sense of responsibility for Emeline doesn’t necessarily stem from what may happen to her in the great, wide world — though I do have to tamp those dark thoughts which linger like an unwelcome haunt in my too-vivid imagination. I see every day that she is bright, her mind vibrant and inquisitive. I will one day have to tell her about life, about who we are, why we are here, what our meaning represents, and what happens beyond life. I wonder what in the hell I will say.

Florida Exports Concealed Carry Permits to Questionable People in Other States

And at least one person is dead because of it. The St. Pete Times ran an editorial pointing out the problem. More than 95,000 concealed carry permits have been sent to other states, often to people who have been denied these permits in their home state. The permit holders don’t even have to come to Florida, they can obtain them through the mail, submitting only “a notarized 30-item questionnaire, a photo, a fingerprint form, proof of firearms training and a fee.” This certainly doesn’t seem good enough to screen these people for potential problems and it turns out it hasn’t been good enough:

On word that the US Department of Justice has indicted two men working for the Iranian government on charges that they attempted to assassinate the Saudi Arabian ambassador and possibly injure hundreds of innocent Americans in a terrorist attack on American soil, New Mexicans are renewing last week's call for Governor Susana Martinez, Congressman Steve Pierce and the New Mexico Republican party to return tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions received from corrupt business interests who are reported to have benefited from illegal oil and equipment sales to the terrorist-sponsoring state.

History will tell whether Karl Rove is right or Mark Block is right. -- Wisconsinite Mark Block, Herman Cain's campaign manager, in Roll Call.

Tough to pick between two repulsive choices, but I'll have to go with Karl Rove.

Did I mention that Block was once banned from doing any political work in Wisconsin?

US taxes corporations at highest rate -- Except they don't pay any taxes

Incredible.

That means unbelievable.

The Journal Sentinel's PolitiFact, which prides itself on putting things "into context" -- which is how it justifies its frequently warped conclusions -- says Rep. Fat Jim Sensenbrenner's (Isn't that what the F stands for? See photo) claim that US corporations pay the highest tax rate in the world -- 35% -- is true.

No mention of the fact that the Government Accountability Office says that two-thirds of US corporations pay no federal income tax at all.  Zero.  Zip. Zilch. Nada.

In fact, PolitiFact Ohio (it's a franchise operation) checked a claim by Rep. Marcia Fudge that some of the biggest corporations pay NO taxes. Her statement rated true.

Any corporation that is paying 35% needs a new accountant.

Petition delivery and press conference

Another victory for the people, thanks to the hard work of some dedicated health care advocates and your support of their petition! Less than a week after a coalition of health care advocates delivered the petition signatures of 1,500 New Mexicans calling for Blue Cross Blue Shield to withdraw its latest health insurance rate hike, the company learned that the increase was denied.

According to a story in this morning's Santa Fe New Mexican, the company failed to support the rate hike in its application to the State Insurance Superintendent.

Our classrooms are overcrowded. Our teachers are overworked. All due to misplaced priorities during budget cuts. And, the mega corporations? Record profits. They’re making more than ever before.

New Mexico’s working families are tightening their belts and doing more with less. It’s time for everyone to pay their fair share and end the corporate handouts!

Mega companies such as ExxonMobil, General Electric and Bank of America pay ZERO taxes -– and they’re not alone! Nearly 2/3 of U.S. corporations pay no taxes at all after deductions, refunds and credits.* In fact, General Electric recently closed a local New Mexico plant that cost us 400 high-quality jobs.

Jobs: Obama Administration Announces Selection of Navajo Gallup Water Supply Project and 13 Others to be Expedited Through Permitting/Review Process

Yesterday, the Obama Administration announced the selection of 14 infrastructure projects around the country that will be expedited through permitting and environmental review processes. The administration says it's an important next step in its efforts to improve the efficiency of federal reviews needed to help job-creating infrastructure projects move as quickly as possible from the drawing board to completion.

One of the 14 selected for expedition is the Navajo Gallup Water Supply Project, which will build two water treatment plants and deliver water through approximately 280 miles of pipeline, 24 pumping plants and numerous water regulation and storage facilities bringing a clean and sustainable water supply to the Navajo Nation in northwestern New Mexico. The Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation will work to improve coordination between Federal and non-federal entities and to expedite land acquisition through the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Bureau of Land Management.

Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District applauded the move by the Obama Administration.

Sessions and Shelby Jobs Act Vote

"Where are the jobs?" is just a campaign slogan to Republicans.  They run a mile from any actual jobs legislation.  Harry Reid is rightly calling them out for putting politics before the good of the nation:

Brown's signature makes California Dream Act a reality

by Brian Leubitz

The California Dream Act is not quite the major reform that the Dream Act represents at the federal level, but it is a nice place to start.  There was some doubt as to whether Gov. Brown would sign the second piece of legislation, as there was a $14.5 million redirection of funds involved.  However, ultimately the Governor came to the right decision:

"Going to college is a dream that promises intellectual excitement and creative thinking,'' Brown said in a statement. "The Dream Act benefits us all by giving top students a chance to improve their lives and the lives of all of us.''

Under AB 131, illegal immigrants who are accepted into state universities can receive, starting in 2013, Cal-Grant assistance, which last year provided grants averaging $4,500 apiece to more than 370,000 low-income students.

The measure also allows students who are not in the country legally to get institutional grants while attending the University of California and California State University systems, and to get fee waivers in the California community college system.

You Get What You Pay For

October 12, 2011 by Left in Alabama

My Facebook friends keep me informed about every special event—last week it was National Angelfood Cake Day, and yesterday was National Coming Out Day. For docs who see Medicare patients, it seems like every day has turned into Fix the SGR Day. To the point that I want it fixed too, just so they will find something else to talk about!

The SGR (Sustainable Growth Rate) was intended to be a tool to keep Medicare payments to providers from escalating out of control. It hasn’t worked, partly because it has never been used as anything other than a threat or bargaining tool.  Each year (or more often than that), Congress delays putting it into effect but lets the AMA foam at the mouth protesting. Because payments have risen much faster than the SGR allows, invoking it would result in an ever-increasing cumulative pay cut.

Ryan Commits Class Warfare and Division by Blaming Obama for Class Warfare and Division.

Paul Ryan likes to divide us by bringing up and blaming others for class warfare and division! But its really the old game of, "I know you are but what am I."

Paul Ryan is a master of this game. His use of talking point cliches, like a Klingon cloaking device, hides many of his plans major flaws. The formula Ryan uses looks something like this:
Ryan: "(wonky sounding numbers), cliche, (wonky sounding numbers), cliche.
Studying Ryan's Reactions: Looking past the condescending leadership style of Paul Ryan, you'll see him falter a little with Meet the Press' David Gregory, and then spew his formulaic answer. He makes the false claim Obama's stimulus failed, deflecting attention away from his own daja vu policies that ended up crashing the global economy.

Gregory: "Aren't you vulnerable to the charge Republicans are only looking out for the rich, isn't that divisive?"
