Upgrade Fever

April 17, 2009 by Steve Hanson

We're in the middle of a site upgrade - we're finally getting RootsWire moved from Drupal 5 to Drupal 6.  This will in the long run give us much more flexibility and power for the site - but it also means that for perhaps the next week, things may be a little uneven here.  For the time being, for example, the archive of Democratic Convention 2008 news has disappeared.  You'll be seeing some considerable changes here over the next month.  Please hang in there.  It will eventually pay off.

50 State Blog Network

January 31, 2009 by Steve Hanson

We've recently invited the members of the 50 State Blog Network to participate in RootsWire. As of today you will start to see blogs from around the country appearing on this site, and bringing you news from different states.  We expect that the number of states will slowly increase as time goes on.  Join us in welcoming the many members of the blog network to RootsWire.

Planning for RootsWire

September 14, 2008 by Steve Hanson

I'm setting up this organic group in RootsWire with the intention of building a closed are for discussing the future of RootsWire.  This will include a lot of different possibilities - at the moment I'm thinking hard about what RootsWire should be, why anyone would want to participate, and how we should proceed.

A large part of this includes how we will fund this project - I think there are a lot of possibilities for this, and we should start using some of the toolkit available to us to build a discussion area.  At the moment, since it's pressing on my mind, this discussion (at least my part of it) will concentrate heavily on funding issues, and what structure this should take as an organization.  In particular, I'm starting to work on some funding application both for the Knight News Challenge and for the Knight Drupal Initiative.

Right at the moment this group involves only myself and Borges.  As interested and useful parties become apparent, we'll open this up to others.

Democratic Convention Coverage is Stopping

September 13, 2008 by Steve Hanson

RootsWire is stopping its aggregation of the Democratic Convention.  In the future we will be bringing you more news from these and other bloggers, and increasing the scope of the RootsWire operation.  For the time being, however, we're going to stop collecting news on this stream, and will be starting on some new projects.

Our plan is to become a  collection point for news from bloggers across the Internet, and to help provide those bloggers with new tools and facilities.

If you're a blogger or news provider and would like to participate, please let us know.  If you have ideas or suggestions, we'd love to hear those as well.  For the next month or so we'll be undergoing some revamping on the site, and you'll see the fire-hose of news slow to a trickle for a while.  But there's lots more coming.

Thank you to all the people who have read us over the last month - it's been busy.  We're going to keep the things that worked, and re-do some of the things that didn't work so well.  We'll talk to you again soon.

Mailing List

September 15, 2008 by Steve Hanson

I've created a mailing list for discussion of RootsWire's future.  I've subscribed myself, Borges, and Tim Kelly of Crack The Bell.  I expect this to be a little more open than this group, and to have it be the "informal" discussion channel.
