It's a Free Country ... Until the 1% Decide It's Not
Freedom of the press. Freedom to peaceably assemble. Are those guarantees just words on an old piece of paper?
On Mayor Bloomberg's orders, NYPD forcibly evicted Occupiers at Zuccotti Park last night. Bloomberg, a billionaire himself, said the decision to evict Occupy Wall Street was "mine and mine alone."
Obama Chides Congress For Focus On Trivia, Not Jobs
President Obama took Congress to task on Wednesday, for focusing on trivial legislation dealing with commemorative coins and the national motto instead of taking action on the jobs bill.
"And if Congress tell you they don't have time, they've got time to do it," Obama said.
"In the House of Representatives, what have you guys been doing, John?" Obama continued, calling out Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio). "You've been debating a commemorative coin for baseball. You've had legislation reaffirming that 'In God We Trust' is our motto. That's not putting people back to work. I trust in God, but God wants to see us help ourselves by putting people back to work."
Public approval of Congress is at 9% -- an all time low. Is it possible John Boehner given up on doing anything positive and decided to secure his place in history by presiding over the most do-nothing Congress ever?

Occupy participant Joe Manns said, “We who are protesting today are in the 99% of people who have been hurt by the brand of “crony capitalism” practiced by many of the financial institutions on Wall Street. We don’t object to anyone’s success, however, we do object to someone who uses honestly earned money entrusted to them to create "back-room deals" in order to achieve financial gain at the expense of everyone else.”
"It's not a huge hole in the ground, it's a tourist attraction!"
Big holeAnother blogger elsewhere recently wondered aloud how the Republican push for mining deregulation in Wisconsin squared with the governor's call for more tourism jobs. I forget the blogger's name, but he or she pointed out that tourism in Wisconsin's pristine, sparkling waterways and forests obviously conflicts with a strip mine that might be 12 miles long and deeper than all but the state's tallest mountain.
But I think I've had an epiphany. I suspect the way Gov. Scott Walker, his legislative minions and the mining industry would like state residents to see open-pit mines in Ashland County or elsewhere is through the eyes of the Wisconsin Department of Tourism. To wit:
