President Obama's Weekly Address: Made In America

October 16, 2011 by Left in Alabama

Speaking from a GM plant in Detroit, with President Lee of South Korea at his side, Barack Obama praised the trade agreements Congress approved a few days ago and urged Congress to use the same bipartisanship to pass the American Jobs Act.

We can’t afford this lack of action.  And there is no reason for it.  Independent economists say that this jobs bill would give the economy a jumpstart and lead to nearly two million new jobs.  Every idea in that jobs bill is the kind of idea both parties have supported in the past.

Even though Senate Republicans blocked debate on the Jobs Act last week, Obama promised that Congress would vote on other parts of the bill, especially those focused on getting people back into the workforceto "earn their piece of the American Dream."

The Buffett Rule Rules!

September 29, 2011 by Left in Alabama

Buffett RuleAmericans overwhelmingly support taxing the rich at least as much as we tax the middle class -- what Barack Obama calls "the Buffett Rule."  A Public Policy Polling (PPP) survey conducted last week for DailyKos.com found Americans overwhelmingly support the Buffett Rule:

Do you support or oppose ensuring that people who make over a million dollars a year pay the same percentage of taxes or more on their total income as those who make less than a million dollars a year?

Overall, 73% of respondents support this radical -- NOT! -- concept that millionaires should pay at least as much as the rest of us.

Obama Mocks Republican Debate Craziness

September 26, 2011 by Left in Alabama

Where has this Barack Obama been since 2008?

"I mean has anybody been watching the debates lately?" Obama said. "You've got a governor whose state is on fire denying climate change.

"It's true. You've got audiences cheering at the prospect of somebody dying because they don't have healthcare. And booing a service member in Iraq because they're gay."

One of our political parties is completely out of touch with reality.  There is no downside to pointing out the GOP is living in la-la land.

Email Johnsmallwood205 [at] aol [dot] com (John Smallwood) if you can lend a hand.  And don't miss the grand opening Saturday night, whether you can help Friday or not!

Obama's alleged doom was Reagan's gain

Little peopleLittle peopleSo the conventional wisdom is now that Barack Obama simply cannot win reelection in 2012 if the unemployment rate doesn't drop significantly by then. His handling of the economy is poohed by two thirds of polling respondents and right now fundy Christian nutcase Rick Perry is riding high in polls as the Republican challenger apparent and a nominee who would beat Obama in the general election.

Oh, really? Well, no one could say times are good, but a key fact seems to have escaped the attention of most pundits:

Ignoring the fact that he inherited an economy on life support, the unemployment rate under Obama has dropped from around 10 percent to 9 percent. At the end of Reagan's first term, when a far less damaging recession was still causing grief, the national unemployment rate was EIGHT PERCENT. Yet Reagan won handily with his "stay the course" campaign. And Obama, unlike Reagan, is likely to face a GOP that has devolved far to the right and is turning off independents in many polls.
