Original Author:
(James Rowen)
This is why we need to elect Democrats, as Republicans, from Walker on down are hell-bent to dirty up the environment and hand over the best public resources to private interests.
EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson delivered a dynamite environmental lecture in Madison, channeling Gaylord Nelson, defending the Clean Air and Water Acts, and explaining what public interest regulation is really all about.

Udall Statement on Veterans Day and Passage of the VOW to Hire Heroes Act
Original Author:
Democracy for New Mexico
Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM) issued the following statement today commemorating Veterans Day and lauding passage of the VOW to Hire Heroes Act in the U.S. Senate:
"The first piece of legislation I succeeded in passing in the Senate, was an amendment to the Recovery Act to expand tax incentives for employers who hire recently returned veterans. We have a duty to help veterans to get a good job when they come home, and this policy helped in that effort, but it expired in 2010.
"Today the Senate renewed its commitment to veterans by passing the VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011. This bipartisan bill will help vets transition their specialized skills to civilian jobs and renews tax credits for businesses that hire unemployed veterans and in particular, wounded warriors. Now, the House should quickly act to pass it so it can become the law of the land.
"This vote is a fitting tribute to veterans but we have much more to do. America's commitment to our veterans must be as strong as their commitment to defending our freedom. As U.S. military involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan comes to a close, our commitment to generations of veterans must only grow stronger. We have a responsibility to remember their sacrifices, not just on Veterans Day, but everyday."
Many progressives have spent much energy noting the enormous ambiguity in the Wisconsin Republican message on guns. That message, of course, is that it's now basically okay for citizens to carry concealed weapons into, among many other places, the State Capitol where Republican lawmakers work. Yet early in the year, Gov. Scott Walker and the GOP legislative leadership temporarily had metal detectors installed at Capitol entrances when protesters arrived to complain about the GOP union-busting bill and other goofball legislation. Keeping the metal detectors in place would kind of kill the concept of concealed carry, wouldn't it?
But from the knuckle-dragging region of the Republican mind, there's no inconsistency at all.
Cognitive Dissonance Dept.: Walker, other Wisconsin Repubs think conservative gun owners will have their backs

A Response to CA Controller Chiang's Challenge from the HHS Network of CA
Original Author:
HHS Network of CA
In an interview with the Sacramento Bee on Wednesday, California Controller John Chiang said lawmakers who fear the prospect of automatic mid-year budget cuts should find alternatives soon:
"I say if you don't like the fact that we may have triggers, then you better offer an alternative, and you should offer that alternative pretty quickly." Here at the Health and Human Services Network of California, we've been fighting the deep cuts to our social safety net and rolling out revenue solutions to the California budget crisis for quite a while now, so we were happy to hear Controller Chiang throw down the gauntlet.
California legislators, here is our list of revenue alternatives to Trigger Cuts:
?Treat oil companies the same as every other government in the world and tax their extraction of oil in California: California is the only oil producing state in the world that does not tax oil production. Furthermore, an oil severance fee is imposed on the process of extracting oil from the ground, and is not passed on to producers or consumers. An oil severance fee could bring an extra $1.2 billion dollars to our state.
?Eliminate secret corporate tax loopholes: End the corporate loopholes that let corporations avoid property tax reassessment when properties are sold, bringing $1.7 billion dollars to California.
