220px-Antonio_Villaraigosa_portraitThis is a guest blog by Antonio Villaraigosa, a Democrat serving as Mayor of Los Angeles, California, the third Mexican American to have ever held office in the city of Los Angeles and the first in over 130 years. He is also the current president of the United States Conference of Mayors. He was first elected mayor on May 17, 2005, and is currently serving his second term.

Raising His Voice

For real change to happen, bold and innovative leaders must step forward to lead. As a former labor organizer, a progressive activist, and Mayor of the great city of Los Angeles, I know what it takes to step forward at critical times to make the tough choices -– and because of that I can spot a leader who gets results when I see one.

Our classrooms are overcrowded. Our teachers are overworked. All due to misplaced priorities during budget cuts. And, the mega corporations? Record profits. They’re making more than ever before.

New Mexico’s working families are tightening their belts and doing more with less. It’s time for everyone to pay their fair share and end the corporate handouts!

Mega companies such as ExxonMobil, General Electric and Bank of America pay ZERO taxes -– and they’re not alone! Nearly 2/3 of U.S. corporations pay no taxes at all after deductions, refunds and credits.* In fact, General Electric recently closed a local New Mexico plant that cost us 400 high-quality jobs.

BryanCranstonCr Today, in an email to Chavez supporters, Breaking Bad actor Bryan Cranston endorsed Marty Chavez in his bid to represent New Mexico’s First Congressional District in the House of Representatives.

“If you've seen an episode of Breaking Bad, you know about the drama, the critical praise, and the awards the TV show has garnered –- but what some people still don’t know is that it's shot right here in Albuquerque! It's one of the great privileges of my life to do this show, but it's also what this production does for the community I've come to love," Cranston said.
