Francis Schaeffer's Article "Subversives From Within" Reposted

A friend of mine sent this article to me.  Francis Schaeffer is the son of Frank Schaeffer and wrote the book, "Crazy for God".  He was heavily involved, along with his father, in the far Christian right's anti abortion movement.  I am currently reading this book, and I felt the need to share this piece with other readers on this site.

Glenn Beck and the 9/12 Marchers: Subversives From Within

Who are these people?! Where do they come from?! Ordinary Americans might wonder why anyone would stoop so low as to follow Glenn Beck, Fox News and Dick Armey (and their corporate sponsors masquerading as "FreedomWorks") as they organize their "9/12 March On Washington" to cynically exploit the 9/11 attack.

Patriotic Americans might question the organizer's aim to provide a media forum for dimwitted right wingers to scream "Liar!" "Socialist!" "Antichrist!" "Muslim!" "Death Panels!" "He's not an American!" and so on and on and on about the commander in chief charged with defending us from further attacks. And some people might even cry "shame on you!" to the more mainstream Republicans participating that include Dick Armey of FreedomWorks, as well as GOP Reps. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Mike Pence of Indiana, Tom Price of Georgia, and South Carolina GOP Sen.

The Filibuster: We're Filibusted

September 17, 2009 by johne

[Much thanks to my friend G. We've had many conversations, online & off, over this subject, over the years, and he's been a great source - RS]

"I don't remember the old-timey filibusters well enough to know whether the majority having to hang around is so. And I don't have time right now to look it up. I just remember: how they had to fill everyone's offices and the cloakroom and all with cots, and how cranky everyone got at having to show up in the chamber in bathrobes."

"AND by all means, lets require the filibusterers ACTUALLY TO DO IT."

In the interests of possibly never hearing or reading any more comments like that, I'm putting up this long essay on what it really means to launch and curtail a filibuster.

Filibusters are governed by Rules XIX and XXII of the Senate. All a filibuster is is a form of obstruction where a Senator (or more than one, theoretically, but you don't see that often) attempts to delay or entirely prevent a vote on a proposal by extending a debate on that proposal.

Sen. Enzi: Please explain why getting beat up by your spouse is a "pre-existing condition"

September 16, 2009 by hummingbirdminds

This Huffington Post article was also on AlterNet:

It turns out that in eight states, plus the District of Columbia, getting beaten up by your spouse is a pre-existing condition.

Under the cold logic of the insurance industry, it makes perfect sense: If you are in a marriage with someone who has beaten you in the past, you're more likely to get beaten again than the average person and are therefore more expensive to insure.

In human terms, it's a second punishment for a victim of domestic violence.

In 2006, Democrats tried to end the practice. An amendment introduced by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), now a member of leadership, split the Health Education Labor & Pensions Committee 10-10. The tie meant that the measure failed.

All ten no votes were Republicans, including Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyoming), a member of the "Gang of Six" on the Finance Committee who are hashing out a bipartisan bill. A spokesman for Enzi didn't immediately return a call from Huffington Post.

Today In The Congressional Races

September 12, 2008 by admin

Welcome to our newest feature here at Election Central -- a roundup of the latest news on a lot of those important down-ballot races.

The presidential race is obviously the biggest thing out there, but all across the country there are a lot of important elections going on that will collectively have an enormous effect on the agenda this country pursues and how effectively the next president will be able to govern.

In these roundups we hope to give you an idea of the big picture going on in those races -- not to mention the individual races themselves in all their quirky, dramatic and often brutally negative glory.

Look for the roundup twice every weekday, one at roughly 11 a.m. ET and one at 6 p.m. ET.

And without further ado...
