Going Down, Down, Down . . .

The Oklahoman published a disingenuous, unsigned editorial Friday about taxes that deserves a response because of a misleading statement that reflects right-wing, clich?d dogma but simply isn't true.

The editorial ("Searching for ways to make tax policy more fair," Sept. 30, 2011) makes some superficial observations about the issue of fairness in the country's taxation system, citing, among other items, U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe's proposal to grant tax incentives for people who install storm shelters and President Barack Obama's recent statements about taxes and wealthy people. It eventually makes the anticlimactic point that it's just about impossible to figure out what is fair or not fair when it comes to taxes.

Fallin, Inhofe Push Storm Shelter Tax Incentives

(Do Oklahomans think state employees, including teachers, are overpaid and get too many benefits? You may be surprised what a new survey shows. Read DocHoc's latest post on SoonerPoll.)

It's not often I agree with U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe or Gov. Mary Fallin, but both are supporting tax incentives for storm shelters, and that's a good thing for Oklahoma.

Inhofe's push to give $2,500 in tax breaks to people who install storm shelters, which can cost up to $10,000, seems especially poignant given his own stormy rhetorical relationship to weather. Inhofe, pictured right, has said he believes global warming is a political "hoax," or, in essence, a huge conspiracy among leading world scientists.

Oklahoma could get a $1.2 billion boost from President Barack Obama's jobs plan, which would help the economy here, but don't count on much support from the state's Congressional delegation.

On Friday, U.S. Senate Democrats released a state analysis of the $447 billion American Jobs Acts. One noteworthy part of the analysis shows Oklahoma will receive $489 million for road and transit projects as part of the overall $1.2 billion. The state has a critical need for road improvements.

The Filibuster: We're Filibusted

September 17, 2009 by johne

[Much thanks to my friend G. We've had many conversations, online & off, over this subject, over the years, and he's been a great source - RS]

"I don't remember the old-timey filibusters well enough to know whether the majority having to hang around is so. And I don't have time right now to look it up. I just remember: how they had to fill everyone's offices and the cloakroom and all with cots, and how cranky everyone got at having to show up in the chamber in bathrobes."

"AND by all means, lets require the filibusterers ACTUALLY TO DO IT."

In the interests of possibly never hearing or reading any more comments like that, I'm putting up this long essay on what it really means to launch and curtail a filibuster.

Filibusters are governed by Rules XIX and XXII of the Senate. All a filibuster is is a form of obstruction where a Senator (or more than one, theoretically, but you don't see that often) attempts to delay or entirely prevent a vote on a proposal by extending a debate on that proposal.

McCain Campaign: No Palin Interviews Until She's Treated With "Deference"
McCain campaign manager Rick Davis told Fox News this morning that Sarah Palin won't be doing any media interviews "until the point in time when she'll be treated with respect and deference," and when Palin would be "comfortable" doing it. So far in this campaign, Palin has taken only one question, from a gushing Alaska reporter: "Governor, we feel like we're losing you -- are you still going to be there for Alaska?"

Obama And McCain Off The Trail, Biden In Montana
Barack Obama has no public events scheduled for today, but Joe Biden is hitting he trail in Montana. Biden has an event in Kalispell, scheduled to being at 4:30 p.m. ET. John McCain does not have any public events today.

Obama Mocks Palin For Earmark Flip-Flops
On Saturday, Barack Obama mocked Sarah Palin for aggressively seeking earmarks in Alaska and campaigning nationally as anti-pork, yet another sign that Palin has eclipsed John McCain as the real story on the Republican ticket. "I mean, words mean something," Obama said. "You can't just make stuff up."
