The Divides That Bind Us, by Dr. Mary Washington

August 27, 2008 by Center for Emer...

Center for Emerging Media's picture

What is Unity? It seems that the theme within the convention is  “from many one.” And yet do some in both the leadership and the rank and file of the Democratic Party find an uneasiness seeking to place us behind a candidate that embraces the diversity of opinion and strategies that is characteristic of a progressive and dynamic constituency? Do we deep down in our hearts believe the pundits and naysayers that see this cacophony of voices as a failure to stay on message and that we are fool hearty to have the audacity to speak of unity at the foot of the Tower of Babel?

Denver must come to symbolize the big tent and yes, we must learn to fight together toward many goals. Does the Democratic Party contradict itself to claim America to be “One Nation.”  I think the answer is “Yes” and it should be as Walt Whitman put, “Very well then I contradict myself,  (I am large, I contain multitudes.)”

The DNC: Hillary's Big Moment... Unity?

August 27, 2008 by MOMocrats

Dncc_logo_8 It had been hyped like crazy, predicted, wondered about, and in some corners, feared, but tonight Hillary outdid even herself, saying what needed to be said to unify this fired up but fractured party.  You've seen the TV coverage, but let me give you a little backstage color.

Thank You Senator Clinton

I must say, as a (former) Clinton nay-sayer, that I am very impressed with her speech tonight.  I find it inspirational and I find her to be sincere.

If she gave speeches like this during the campaign, she would be the nominee tonight.  Kudos Senator Clinton.

The one thing I thought Senator Clinton was stronger on than Obama is healthcare - and I am glad to see that she is still a strong advocate for universal coverage.

I've got to go now, I think she is about to rip McCain a new one.  Well, let's hope so ;-)

Tuesday Update

August 26, 2008 by admin

So much has happened that I'm not sure where to begin, and I don't have many pictures to upload at the moment. But let's start with the weather:

According to the Rocky Mountain News, it's currently 90 degrees outside - but it feels a lot hotter.

Probably has a lot to do with the body heat being generated by the tons of people who are packed in to tight spaces for this spectacle. Last night the floor of the convention was so packed, that people were shoulder-to-shoulder with no room to move. This normally happens at conventions - but on the final night, during the nominees speech. This does not normally happen on a Monday night. The streets are packed, looks more like New York City than Denver.

The good thing about the city is the most of it is walkable to some degree. So the traffic gridlock that is also taking place doesn't interrupt the flow of events that much.

The speeches last night were fun, though it seems to me that we might benefit from a rule that any speaker who takes the podium when it is not prime time should at least be funny. You know, warm up the crowd a little bit, keep it interesting...or something...anything!

Time to get real, folks

I love closure as much as the next guy, and having spent thirty years in the Pacific Northwest, God knows I've seen enough marathon, five-laps-around-Green-Lake-lesbian-processing-sessions for one lifetime. But when I woke up this morning, there were some PUMAs on NPR venting about how everything had to be just so in their endlessly rolling series of demands.

Jesus F. Christ! I lost a runoff election by three votes. It sucks. It hurts.  You get to see the candidate you think is an effing moron take office.

AND THAT IS HOW LIFE WORKS.

So let's hope that Senator Clinton will quit the fan dance where she goes through the motions for Obama but leaves the PUMAs plenty of room to act up nonetheless. I mean- really. This is the sort of stunt the Christianists pull every for years, but in the end they pray on it, and God says, "Get a grip!"

Which, in Washington's notably fractious delegation, is what state chair Dwight Pelz is doing:
