Kentucky Perspective: Micah Spicer

September 1, 2008 by BlueGrassRoots

Here's another perspective on the Democratic National Convention from a young Kentuckian, Micah Spicer:

This morning, the Kentucky Delegation met to discuss the plans for the upcoming events.  We were very surprised to have a very special guest speaker… Democratic Party Chairman, Howard Dean.  The former Vermont Governor really spoke highly of Unions across the country.  He mentioned that Organized Labor across the country has been more successful in grassroots campaigning in the last several years than any other group.  Dean confirmed that he envisioned the Democratic Party taking notes from these Union Leaders and mobilizing a grassroots campaign like no other.

Sarah Palin: Who?

August 29, 2008 by buckeyestateblog

Well, I made it back to Cleveland today.

This morning, when I got to Denver Int'l Airport I was treated to the sound of a member of a TV crew asking this question at loud volume into their cell phone: "Who the hell is Sarah Palin?"

So I told them: Sarah Palin is 44 years old, the mother of 5 who is the governor of Alaska, a state with less than half the population of Cuyahoga County, Ohio. 18 months ago, she was the mayor of a city with less than 10,000 residents. And in the 18 months she's served in office, she's already gotten herself embroiled in the Ted Stevens scandal.

This is a horrible, horrible VP pick that shows just how far the GOP has fallen. This is the Ken Blackwell trick all over again: in 2006, the Ohio GOP reasoned that maybe black voters would vote for a conservative ideologue if he was black. Now John McCain is betting that PUMA's will vote for a pair of conservatives ideologues because he put a female on the ticket.

A Moment of Reflection - DNC Convention

August 28, 2008 by johne

When I submitted my application to run as a National Delegate last February, I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

What an amazing week it has been! I'm very proud of my Party and my hometown. From the Delegate's perspective, our Host City has been hospitable and the logistics of the Convention have been very smooth.

I've decided to take a short break from all of the political fanfare and progressive wonkery to reflect on the past three days. I would have written sooner, but I've had no time to think!

Seating
Wow. Being the host delegation has its perks. Even though the photographers and camermen trampled most of us during the week, it was worth it to be close to the action on the stage.

The Speakers

Pace's DNC Post 8/27/08

August 28, 2008 by admin

Today is our last day at the Convention. We've decided to not go to Invesco Field tomorrow night. Estimates are that there will be over 70,000 people there to witness Obama's acceptance speech. Much as I would love to be there personally, the thought of being outside in 90 degree+ weather for close to 8 hours does not sound like the best place for me. Accordingly, we will be heading back to cloudy and rainy Anchorage. Home sweet home :-)

What can I say about tonight that you haven't already seen on the news? The energy in the room was electrifying to say the least. With each speaker the crowd grew more and more enthusiastic. From the roll call vote though the surprise visit by Barack there wasn't a dull moment. Who wasn't touched by the former Republican Rear Admiral who spoke about his change of party as he grew dissatisfied with the direction of the Bush administration? And what about the appearance of all o those female Democratic Senators? Senator Clinton was inspirational in her decision to call for the close the roll call vote and proceed with the direct nomination of Barack Obama? The crowd went wild! She did just what she needed to do...unify the party. From my vantage point on the floor of the DNC she did just that.

Overcome

August 27, 2008 by MOMocrats

Near the end of his remarks, President Clinton started to turn when he  spoke of also being criticized for being too young and inexperienced.   You could finally see the connection to Barack in his eyes.

Then came the astonishingly compelling Kerry--how did we fail to elect  that great man? How?

Then Beau Biden. What parent wasn't moved to tears by that son's  tribute to his father?

Yeah, we were so moved in the Pepsi Center we seemed to give Joe Biden  a quiet welcome. We wanted to shout and cheet but after the beautiful  video about our veterans, the powerful female Major, and then Beau, we  were overcome, plain and simple.

Overcome.

This ticket is extraordinary. I cannot believe I am witnessing this.
