If a great protest falls upon Wall Street, and no reporter is there to write about it, does it make a noise?

Occupy Wall StreetOccupy Wall StreetThe other day I blogged about how the "occupation" of Wall Street in New York City by thousands of demonstrators for more than a week has raised hardly a blip on the domestic news media radar screen. It's as if editors and news directors (and their corporate masters) have decided there's nothing new to see here. So move on, move on (wait, even that sounds too radical).

But it's even worse than malign neglect, because in the rare moments when a mainstream news outlet does mention the protests (which like those in Wisconsin beforehand have been very peaceful, and which have attracted Web-based pizza orders from afar), the tone is almost ominous. Consider, for example, this lead-in from CNN "Situation Room" host Wolf Blitzer last Monday: "Protests here in New York on Wall Street entering a third day. Should New Yorkers be worried at all about what's going on?"

I'm here. Bitch and Sybil were kind enough to let me take our one press pass. But then through Bitch's perserverance and connections, they were able to get two more tickets! Which you would know if you were following our twitters. I hope they get here soon, even though I won't be with them because they have a different type of pass than me.

I'm in the press section, row 16. It's the bottom lever and I am thus REALY CLOSE to the floor. I could be sitting even closer but then my view of the stage would be blocked. I'm about 150 feet from the CNN pavilion where I can see Wolf Blitzer, Donna Brazile, and Anderson Cooper clear as day. Wolf Blitzer looks like a cardboard cutout of himself. The stage is right in front of me. I have a profile view of the speaker just above a curtain in a press pavilion.

Speakers have just started. The schedule is here.

DNC08: Quick On the Scene Report

Watching the convention from home, generally you only see inside the hall where big wigs are speaking. What I didn’t realize was that the Democratic National Convention is much bigger than that. There are so many events happening. The Pepsi Center is only one part of the story. It was cool seeing Michelle Obama and members of the extended Obama family on the convention floor. There are a lot of celebs wandering around — at the Pepsi Center I caught a glimpse of Gayle Knight (as in Oprah and Gayle). That was exciting! I said hello and she hollered back over her shoulder. Wolf Blitzer was being interviewed by local Denver tv right beside me. In front of the building the Daily Show correspondents frolicked.

I also got a good look at the bloggers lounge and the media tent pavillions at Pepsi Center. In the bloggers lounge at Pepsi Center, they actually have a den mother and den dad to keep the bloggers behaving. Ha.

Many of the events require rsvps — there’s a lot of security here and different levels of access and ease of movement depending on your VIP status. Are you walking, taking the bus, got a private golf cart, riding with a driver or in a limo? (I’ve been taking the bus a lot & walking.)
