Strickland names interim Development Director as Director

September 16, 2009 by buckeyestateblog

(HT: Columbus Dispatch)

Governor Strickland announced today that he's making Interim Director Lisa Patt-McDaniel the official Director of the Ohio Department of Development.  Thus, filling a politically embarassing gap in his economic team since the resignation of Lt. Governor Lee Fisher as Director in order to focus on his Senate bid.

“I am incredibly impressed with the leadership, commitment, deep knowledge and sound judgment Lisa has demonstrated not only as interim director but in her years as a leader in economic and workforce development for Ohio,” Strickland said in a statement. “Lisa has listened to our workers and businesses and knows what they need. Lisa is helping to position Ohio for long-term prosperity.”

...

Patt-McDaniel, who has worked in the development department since 1990 and most recently was director of the department's work force and talent division, earned her bachelor's degree in public policy from Miami University and a master's degree in public administration from Ohio State University.

Despite having no audio, we've pressed on and are proud (barely) to present our brief interview with Lee Fisher from Labor Day Weekend.

[UPDATED:] Reaction to yesterday's passage of HB 176 pouring in

September 16, 2009 by buckeyestateblog

Governor Ted Strickland-

“I applaud the leadership of House Speaker Armond Budish, Rep. Dan Stewart and Rep. Ross McGregor, as well as the bipartisan group of House members who today affirmed that Ohio is a welcoming and inclusive state.  This legislation will help attract and retain the talent Ohio businesses need to foster lasting economic growth and prosperity.  I am hopeful that I will have the opportunity to sign this bill into law.  This is an important step forward for Ohio, as nondiscrimination in employment and housing will ensure that all of our people are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.”

Secretary of State/'10 Democratic Senate candidate Jennifer Brunner-

Today the Ohio House of Representatives passed House Bill 176, landmark legislation to guarantee equal rights in housing and employment to persons who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered.

This legislation is a huge step forward for Ohio--especially in the aftermath of the 2004 constitutional amendment that was spearheaded by my predecessor in the Ohio Secretary of State's office, Ken Blackwell.

Be sure to stop back tomorrow as we post our interview with Ohio Lt. Governor Lee Fisher.

OhioDaily spent some time with the U.S. Senate candidate over Labor Day Weekend, and despite an embarrassing technical issue on our end which kept us from being able to deliver our interview in a timely fashion, we've finally been able to piece together some video, our notes, and some perspective as we talk to Fisher about health care, Afghanistan, guns, and more.

Lee Fisher Follows Jennifer Brunner to Huffington Post

As many of you know, Jennifer Brunner has been availing herself of opportunities to expose herself and her ideas to a national audience via some of the biggest national progressive blogs since the beginning of the summer. She's held chats at Firedoglake, posted at DailyKos and written three thoughtful essays for Huffington Post on marriage equality, health-care reform and the importance of the public option, and the politics of empowerment.

Today, her opponent in the Democratic Senate primary race, Lee Fisher, posted his first essay at Huffington Post on the foreclosure crisis and the importance of cram-down legislation. He has a link to a petition on his website you can sign.

It's not hard to argue that such a crisis exists, not only here in Northeast Ohio but in many places, and cram-down legislation (allowing judges in bankruptcy cases to adjust mortgage principals to the actual value of the home) is a sensible step to take in easing it.
