Baldwin's campaign shows savvy, to set up in Milwaukee
Tammy Baldwin has hired an experienced campaign manager with good national connections.
The best news in the Roll Call story may be this:
Karin Johanson is taking leave from her position as a principal at the Dewey Square Group and is headed to Milwaukee as soon as she lines up office space in the area.
That's a smart decision. Statewide campaigns based in Milwaukee have a different feel and different view of the state. For Democrats, it is where the votes and money are. For Madison-based Baldwin, setting up shop in the city is a good first step.
I ain't Art Kumbalek, but I told you so.
Urban Wildlife Refuge in Albuquerque's South Valley Gets the Go-Ahead

Democracy for New Mexico

U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich with students from Mountain View Elementary, in attendance at the announcement of what will become first national wildlife refuge in the Southwest. Mountain View Elementary is just down the road from the property.
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar recently announced that a proposed 570-acre national wildlife refuge on a former dairy farm just a few miles south of New Mexico’s largest metropolitan area has been approved. As proposed, the site will serve as an urban oasis for both wildlife and people. Very exciting, for everyone involved. Establishment of a new Albuquerque-based national wildlife refuge is a win-win situation for people and wildlife, for the economy and open space conservation, for visitors and residents alike.
Veteran/victim of Iraq war will play benefit concert on 9/11 to help homeless vets
As you undoubtedly know, Sunday is the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack that changed the world. And there will be many ways to observe the day, no doubt including a considerable amount of flag-waving.
In Milwaukee, you can attend a ceremony at the War Memorial Sunday morning, at which a piece of steel from the World Trade Center will be unveiled.
Peace Action Wisconsin, which is willing to at least listen to conspiracy theories if not subscribe to them, will host a public discussion, "Ten Years Later - Let' s Talk About 9/11."
Or you can spend an hour or two Sunday night with one of the victims of the Iraq war that resulted from 9/11. Jason Moon, an Iraq veteran and singer-songwriter, will play a benefit for the Homeless Veterans Initiative sponsored by Milwaukee Veterans for Peace. It starts at 7pm at the Coffee House, 631 N. 19th, Milwaukee. David Kaye will open. Your $10 donation will go to help homeless vets.
Rick Perry Campaign A Lesson In Conservatives' Fiscal Double-Standards
Original Author:
(James Rowen)
Conservatives like Texas Gov. Rick Perry talk a lot about frugality, but note that Perry has arranged for records of state spending on his travel be kept secret, and that expenses for his security entourage, which helps set up campaign events, are principally paid from the state highway fund, according to The Washington Post.
In the meantime, during a special session that ended July 1, the Texas Legislature, at Perry’s urging, added language to a school finance bill that will seal the governor’s travel records for 18 months — until after the 2012 presidential election...
Before Perry’s travel records were sealed, Texas newspapers were able to shed some light on his travel and the cost to taxpayers, including [a] Bahamas trip.
The records, reported in 2005 by the Austin American-Statesman, showed that Perry and staff members had traveled the previous year to the Bahamas for a meeting with top campaign donor James Leininger, a supporter of public school vouchers and charter schools, his wife, and Grover Norquist, a national anti-tax advocate.
The records showed $4,200 in taxpayer money was spent for the squad of six state troopers who went along, including costs for renting scuba gear, golf cars and cellphones, according to the newspaper...
Ron Johnson lecturing on the Constitution? Priceless. No, worthless.
This may break some new ground.
Oshkosh’s own, U.S. Senator Ron Johnson will make his way to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh to speak in September as part of the annual Constitution Day activities.
Constitution Day, recognized nationally on Sept. 17, commemorates the ratification of the Constitution in 1787 and encourages students to become informed citizens...
“This is an exciting opportunity for our students and the community to hear Senator Ron Johnson deliver his first major address devoted to the Constitution,” said David Siemers, political science professor. “At UW Oshkosh we stress that everyone has a responsibility to learn about and participate in our community. Senator Johnson’s appearance allows our students to hear from and interact with an important policy maker up close, and his speech should increase meaningful dialogue on campus about what the United States stands for.”
Will Johnson will explain his authority to appoint federal judges?
