At the end of the third quarter, NM-1 Democratic Rep. Martin Heinrich has an impressive lead over all other candidates in campaign fundraising for the U.S. Senate race in New Mexico. Last Wednesday, Heinrich's campaign released a statement saying that his 3Q report would show him raising more than $650,000 between July 1 and September 30, 2011, with a cash-on-hand total of more than $1.1 million. They also said then that "the impressive total was fueled by 2,596 individuals, 94 percent of whom gave $200 or less."

Today it was revealed that fellow Democratic Senate candidate, State Auditor Hector Balderas, raised about $250,000 in Q3, and has nearly $465,000 in cash on hand.

220px-Antonio_Villaraigosa_portraitThis is a guest blog by Antonio Villaraigosa, a Democrat serving as Mayor of Los Angeles, California, the third Mexican American to have ever held office in the city of Los Angeles and the first in over 130 years. He is also the current president of the United States Conference of Mayors. He was first elected mayor on May 17, 2005, and is currently serving his second term.

Raising His Voice

For real change to happen, bold and innovative leaders must step forward to lead. As a former labor organizer, a progressive activist, and Mayor of the great city of Los Angeles, I know what it takes to step forward at critical times to make the tough choices -– and because of that I can spot a leader who gets results when I see one.

On word that the US Department of Justice has indicted two men working for the Iranian government on charges that they attempted to assassinate the Saudi Arabian ambassador and possibly injure hundreds of innocent Americans in a terrorist attack on American soil, New Mexicans are renewing last week's call for Governor Susana Martinez, Congressman Steve Pierce and the New Mexico Republican party to return tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions received from corrupt business interests who are reported to have benefited from illegal oil and equipment sales to the terrorist-sponsoring state.
