I'll love you in buckskin
Or skirts that I've homespun
But I'll love ya' longer, stronger where
Yer friends don't tote a gun
-- Buttons and Bows by Dinah Shore.
In the days Dinah was singing about, East was East and West was West. And it was in the wild West where your friends might tote a gun.
These days, it's just about anywhere in the United States, except for Illinois, the last state to hold out against allowed people to pack concealed weapons. Wisconsin was Number 49 to join the concealed carry states, with a new law to take effect on Nov. 1.
No one knows exactly how many people will apply for permits, but it seems likely to be in the hundreds of thousands.
Imagine that -- hundreds of thousands of people carrying concealed weapons. Is that supposed to make us feel safer?

16 Democratic state senators; Do I hear 17? Going once, going twice ...
You've heard it here before and will no doubt hear it again: What's going on, Democrats?
On Tuesday, we celebrated the swearing-in of two new State Senators, Jennifer Schilling and Jessica King, slicing the Republican majority in the upper house to a single vote, at 17-16.
Those two women won recall elections last month, but Democrats failed to pick up the third seat they needed to be able to block the further passage of the Scott Walker/right-wing Republlican agenda.
A month ago, taking over the State Senate was life and death. So, have we given up, when one more seat would swing the balance? That's the way the media portrays it, reporting only about the possibility of recalling Walker himself next year and speculating about whether that will or could happen.
The latest Journal Sentinel story all but wrote off the legislature:
GOP bludgeons labor unions once again in Wausau Labor Day parade dispute
Making you work harderThe Marthon County Labor Council has blinked, saying it will now permit Republicans to particpate in Wausau's Labor Day parade.
According to the Wausau Herald, Labor Council President Randy Radtke sent an email late Tuesday saying everyone will be permitted to march in the parade, which is organized by the council. Radtke added, however:
