Meghan McCain, appearing on the Today Show, made one of the most egotistical and ignorant statements I've ever heard. It was stunning in its thoughtlessness and dismissive of the sacrifice of millions of people with loved ones serving in the Middle East.
When asked what she thinks when Barack Obama and others say her father doesn't "get it" she said,
I think my father gets it more than anyone. I mean, my family — I have two brothers serving in the military. One is about to redeploy to Iraq. My father is obviously a famous war hero. No one knows what war is like other than my family, period.
(Emphasis mine.) She then went on to point out that Sarah Palin's son, Track, is deploying to Iraq on September 11th.
Meghan, we need to talk.
Country First, Family a Distant Second
Doug McCain may be John McCain's oldest son, but he appears to have sprung fully formed from the earth. The
Virginian-Pilot's fawning article about McCain's oldest child mentions the five years John McCain spent as a P.O.W. What it doesn't mention is Doug's mother and her treatment as a doormat for McCain's ambition. To read the Pilot article (or was it a Republican press release?), the three eldest McCain children didn't have a mother.
Let's forget that Carol McCain waited for her man to return in the timeless tradition of the Navy wife. Let's forget that she sustained horrible injuries in a car accident. Let's forget that when McCain came home to his handicapped wife, he skedaddled.
The Republican National Convention showed a video before McCain's speech last night-the timeworn, misty-eyed biography of the true American hero. When they got to the story of McCain meeting his current trophy wife Cindy at a Waikiki Beach cocktail party, "it was love at first sight." "She met a dashing Navy Captain," the film gushed. There was a wry joke about John and Cindy lying to each other about their ages. That's soooo cute (and so prophetic of the "straight talk" to come). But did he mention he was married at the time? The video didn't.
Family values? Integrity? Loyalty?
DNC 08: A Look at Obama's Foreign Policy Team
Yes, we know the Republicans are having their convention, and we're watching it with great interest. It's reminding us of how much more positive and inclusive our OWN convention was last week.
We still have a LOT of material from Denver that we've yet to share with you. So we hope you'll allow us to bask a little longer in the DNC's light. We think it will be a nice counterpoint to the bile we're hearing out of St. Paul.
John McCain's supporters have argued vociferously that Barack Obama has too little foreign policy experience to be an effective President in an increasingly dangerous world. (At least, that was their argument before McCain announced Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate).
RNC08 Day 1.5 Analysis
I'll try to objectively talk about What I Saw at the Devolution, but I'm sure I'll fail. Let me start with what I thought was good.
The Teddy, Georgie and Ronny videos were good. I mean, most people forget that John McCain was Assistant Secretary of the Navy under Teddy Roosevelt, and there may be one or two people who have forgotten that John McCain, like Bush I, had his plane shot down.
You can't go wrong tossing around Reagan in front of a Republican crowd. I caught my wife tearing up a bit during the Ronny tribute. Of course, you can't help but think that a hell of a lot of people in that crowd were also thinking, "We had Reagan, and now we're stuck with a dude who plucked the mayor of Mayberry North out of obscurity and put otherwise rational people in the position of singing her praises on live television?"
Shit, I've already quit being objective, haven't I? Let me try again.
