Republican-based democracy: America is a club you can't afford

As the nutball legislation dispensed by the Republican caucus in Madison continues apace, it's good to take the 10,000-foot view and consider what the overall GOP asgenda means for average state residents. When you look over the list, one theme emerges: It's all about money.

If you don't have any money or an insufficient amount of it, you simply are not going to be able to afford the new GOP flavor of democracy. America is rapidly being transformed into an exclusive club, whose members are wealthy and whose dues are paid by the rest of us.

Here's a brief but not totally inclusive rundown exemplifying this bold new GOP world:

Injured by a corporation? Too bad, because you no longer will be able to afford the cost of suing.

Buying a product or service? Risky! You won't be able to complain if something goes wrong, unless you first sign the seller's "compulsory arbitration clause" signing away your remaining rights to sue in court.

Get sick? You won't be guaranteed paid days off.

Good message for Occupy Wall Street Everywhere Day: Ditch your big bank!

We've had our checking and savings accounts, even mortgages and IRA's, at Credit Unions in Milwaukee since 1983. Here's plenty of information about options to big banks:

Seems in the oft-faked world these people live in, "immediately" can also mean "after seven months."

The Republican chaos engine

The thing to keep in mind when dealing with modern Republicans is that they depend heavily on two tactics: One of those tactics can best be described as a sophisticated version of the childhood retort: "I know you are, but what am I?" That's the effective GOP response when, for example, critics accurately note that Republican administrations tend to run high deficits and enact tax giveaways for special interests that make those deficits worse.

The second tactic, which is really just a psychological means of dealing with their own hypocrisy, is when Republicans project their own behaviors and motives onto the opposition. In short, Republicans are willful dissemblers but also, deeper down, in denial of their own dysfunction and inadequacy -- and quite willing to fantasize that it's always the other guy's fault. Projection increasingly is the psycho-glue that holds their fractured party and ideology together.

Four-Hour Gun Carry Requirement In Wisconsin Masks The Real Story

Which is the complete insanity of the concealed carry law and its supporters obeisance before the political enforcers in the NRA in the first place.

So Walker can look 'reasonable' by approving, on an interim basis, the four-hour training requirement - - as opposed to the zero-minutes training requirement that the ever-farther-out gun advocates want.

Nothing good is going to come of this fiasco.

Milwaukee Expects A Lot Of Water-And-Development Information From Waukesha

It is not a surprise that Milwaukee is asking Waukesha for a great deal of water-sale-related data and facts, but does indicate how high and intricate are the planning and development hurdles Waukesha has to meet if it wants Milwaukee to sell it water.

And that is if...if...if...all eight Great Lakes states approve Waukesha's application for Lake Michigan water diversion, conservation and waste water discharge plans.

I have previously posted the Milwaukee Common Council resolution, #080457 that lays out what Milwaukee needs to see and hear from Waukesha on several policy matters, and here is a link to the full text.

You Don't Have To Be An "Environmentalist" To Be Outraged By This Case

[reposted due to technical problem] Wisconsin's lakes, rivers and streams, as common waterways, belong by law and the State Constitution to the people of Wisconsin - - all the people - - yet the lengths certain people with money and a sense of entitlement will go to tamper with and damage these public waterways for their own private uses boggles the mind.
The couple did not have state permits when they began building a stone wall in August 2009, damaging more than 10,000 square feet of lake shore and bed, Van Hollen said in a statement. They also dumped 70 cubic yards of sand on the lake bed without a permit in August and September of 2009.
This took place on Upper Nashotah Lake, where others find spiritual renewal.
