Former Sen. Fred Harris: NM Superdelegate

Here's a video of an interview we did recently with former Oklahoma Sen. Fred R. Harris, who's a New Mexico superdelegate. Sen. Harris also chaired the Democratic National Party from 1969-70 and ran for president in 1972 (briefy) and again in 1976. Harris was a major force behind opening up the Democrat's convention and delegate process to minorities, women and ordinary Dems, workiing with former Sen. George McGovern and others. If it wasn't for the small "d" democratic efforts of Harris and other progressive Democrats, it's unlikely that either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama would have been primary candidates this year. And DNC delegates wouldn't be the diverse bunch they are today. Thank you Senator Harris!

The DNC LGBT caucus - and the sideshow outside

It was a real zoo out there at the Denver Convention Center this afternoon, the venue for the LGBT caucus. Autumn and Terrance were able to get into first because they had the valuable credentials. I waited for Russ, who had the perimeter credential, to arrive from the Pepsi Center so we could swap out. He went off to film some additional fundies for you all, and there is a bumper crop out there -- abortion protestors, environmentalist anti-meat folks (some wearing pig costumes!), and a group of sad-sack John McCainiacs marching.

I was able to interview James Hormel, activist, philanthropist and the first openly gay man to serve as a United States ambassador. I'll have the video of that later. I ran into the gorgeous guys of Towleroad, the other official credentialed LGBT blog (and the bane of Bill Donohue's existence), and a host of folks who said "hello" to all the readers out there.

Among the speakers today at the caucus were: DNC LGBT Caucus Chair, Rick Stafford, Melissa Sklarz, Marjory Hill, John Perez, State Rep Al McCaffrey.

We made it. After walking and walking, I finally made it through security and entered the Pepsi Center. People in Denver Walk. Democrats who attend conventions walk. Sometimes we have to walk completely around the Pepsi Center until we figure out the correct entrance.

Pictures are uploading as I am typing this. Governor Walters addressed the convention about 3:00 p.m. (4:00 Oklahoma time. I’m working on those pictures now

Coming up is Nancy Pelosi, Jessie Jackson Jr., Kathleen Sebelius and Michell Obama. Just to name a few.

Normally I don’t ask to take a photo, but I couldn’t resist on this one.
