Guess who received campaign "donations" from business interests that secretly sold petrochemical equipment to terrorism-sponsor Iran?
- New Mexico's right-wing Governor Susana Martinez ($10,000)
- NM-2 Congressman Steve. Pearce ($10,0000)
- NM Republicans ($5,000)
New Mexicans should start calling for politicians who have accepted contributions from Koch Industries -- and their political arm KOCHPAC -- to return the money or donate it to charity ASAP. Of course you have to wonder why these Republicans need to be urged to return the tainted money. Have they no consciences of their own?
A Bloomberg investigation revealed Sunday that Koch businesses, owned by conservative activists David and Charles Koch, circumvented US trade embargos to sell millions of dollars worth of petrochemical equipment to Iran. Iran is one of four countries designated by the U.S. State Department as a state sponsor of terrorism.
Poll: McCain Takes Narrow Lead In New Mexico
A new Rasmussen poll of New Mexico suggests that John McCain's national bounce has done him some good here -- for the first time, Rasmussen puts McCain ahead in this swing state.
The numbers: McCain 49%, Obama 47%, within the ±4% margin of error. Three weeks ago, Obama had a 48%-44% lead. In 2004, George W. Bush carried this state by a one-point margin.
The poll gives the two candidates very similar favorable/unfavorable ratings. Obama is at 55% favorable and 44% unfavorable, and McCain at 52%-45%, further evidence that this state will be hotly contested all the way to November.
Meanwhile, Dem Congressman Tom Udall has a 51%-44% lead over Republican Congressman Steve Pearce for the open GOP-held Senate seat, narrower than previous margins but still showing a solid advantage for the Dems.
NM-Sen: Tom Udall to Speak Next Wednesday at Dem Convention
The DNC reports that Rep. Tom Udall will be speaking at the Dem Convention in Denver next Wednesday. Udall will join New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, who heads the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), and Maine Rep. Tom Allen, former New Hampshire Gov. Jeanne Shaheen and Oregon state House Speaker Jeff Merkley on the third night of the convention, which has a national security theme. The headline speech that evening will come from Obama's running mate, whoever that may be.
"As a proud Westerner and candidate for United States Senate, it is my honor to take part in this historic Convention for change," said Udall. "In my home state of New Mexico and around the nation, it's clear that voters will have a choice between leaders who will fight for our middle class and do what's right no matter what, or those who choose to stand for the same failed policies of the past."
NM-02: Teague Announces Debate-Forum Schedule
Harry Teague, the Democratic nominee for NM-02, announced his schedule of debates and forums. Harry is running to fill the seat left open by Rep. Steve Pearce. The schedule, which includes events across Southern New Mexico, will give voters the opportunity to contrast the Republican and Democratic candidates' positions on issues, including minimum wage and health care, according to the Teague campaign.
Dates and Sponsors: The televised debates will be sponsored by The Municipal League on August 15th, KRWG on October 9th, and by KOAT and the Albuquerque Journal on October 19th. In addition, Harry will be at the Mining Association Annual Convention Forum on September 4th in Grants, and the AAUW forum in October in Carlsbad.
