Much has already been said about the Department of Justice brief on DOMA. Many of the LGBT organizations have come together to speak out on the subject, releasing a rare joint statement.

David Mixner summed it up well on his own blog with the statement,

The brief in defense of DOMA filed by President Obama’s Department of Justice could have been written by the Rev. Pat Robertson. Using the worst of stereotypes, it intimates that we don’t have constitutional guarantees, invokes scenarios of incest, of children and advocates that we don’t have the same rights as others who have struggled for civil rights.

You fully need to understand the ramifications of this brief: it undercuts every conceivable argument that the LGBT community would use to fight for the repeal of DOMA. Right-wing nut cases can now just simply quote horrible stuff from this hateful brief and proclaim loudly it was filed by the Obama Justice Department. The President and his team have not only undercut this community but have damaged his own ability to repeal this hideous law given to us by President Clinton. With Democratic friends like these, God helps us.

Abortion & Personhood Amendment: Surrogate for many unspoken issues

Abortion serves as surrogate for a spectrum of unspoken issues related to female personhood and male entitlement. The anti-abortion litmus test was introduced over 30 years ago by Paul Weyrich, who dictated that women step aside and "make way for new life." The political standard serves dual purposes - the marginalization of women and the lightning rod around which to mobilize political coalitions, notably, fundamentalist evangelicals and Catholics.

The elevation of fetal life over women's lives coupled with conservative strategist Howard Phillips' goal, euphemistically described as return to "one-family-one-vote," is calculated to marginalize and disenfranchise women, consistent with the ultraright tenet that select white Christian males alone retain the right to vote or hold office.

Consistently overshadowed by the more easily sensationalized issue of abortion, birth control remains a primary target of the political right. On a slippery slope to 19th century status for women, rightists actively promote "conscience clauses" permitting pharmacists and health care providers to refuse filling contraceptive prescriptions or otherwise provide reproductive health care. The right seeks the outlaw of birth control - a primary means to eliminate the need for abortion.

Freakazoids Hoist With Their Own Petard

It took way too long and managed to destroy far too many lives in the process, but the "America is a christian nation" abominable lie is finally fading away.

For the first time in more than a decade, a narrow majority of Americans say churches should stay out of politics, according to a poll released (August 21) by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

The results suggest a potentially significant shift among conservative voters in particular. In 2004, 30% of conservatives said the church should stay out of politics while today 50% of conservatives today express that view.

As they used to teach in elementary school, the second-biggest danger the Founders determined to avoid in designing a new country - after the dictatorship of a monarchy - was the catastrophic religious wars that had ravaged Europe for centuries and that were caused by allowing religion to pollute the public sphere.

What is it with these holier than thou theocrats and breaking the rules...and the law? Does an education at Pat Robertson's Regent University include a course called "Crime and the Christian - The Ten Commandments of Theocracy Building"?

Not only did the Bush administration fast track the barely thirty year old Monica Goodling to one of the most powerful positions in the Justice Department, it gave a total of 150 appointments to graduates from the same Regent University. Then again, if one seeks to remake government into a God and GOP lovin' theocracy, the more the merrier, eh?
