Problem: Legislative Committees That Don't Work
Republican Solution: Make another committee.
This is not a joke.
The Alabama Legislature has created a raft of committees and task forces to "deal with" issues they don't want to, don't need to, can't, or don't have the backbone to deal with legislatively. Many of them never even meet and fail to report back on the issue. "Let's create a committee" is a way to sound busy, no work required.
With roughly 40 boards or commissions set up by the Legislature, House and Senate leaders have started considering steps to evaluate the process of creating legislative committees. House Speaker Mike Hubbard, R-Auburn, said Friday that both he and Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh, R-Anniston, were considering an oversight committee to carry out that task.
Senate Republicans have carefully considered Sen. Scott Beason's misbehaviors and decided that he deserves .... drum roll, please .... absolutely no punishment whatsoever. Yeah, they're through making excuses for Beason -- they've formally decided to impose no consequences for Beason's bad behavior. As usual, it's OK if you're a Republican (IOKIYAAR).
