I had a difficult time being present at the DNC this week (and not only because my laptop crashed the day I arrived in Denver). You see, my husband and I are, well, up to our ears in debt with the expense of our current house.
We bought it when the market was still good. It was a fixer-upper. Only, way more so than we realized (the house we owned prior to it was a new construction and we were unfamiliar with the litany of things that can be problems with purchasing and maintaining an older home - hey!, someone oughtta write a book about that!, huh!). In other words, we had a lot of fixing up to do, right off the bat. And we had to go into debt to do it. Which seemed entirely logical, given the way the housing market had been booming until the last several months. It seemed like a good investment in our home, especially since the repairs needed to be done anyway. We were sure we'd see a return on that investment.

These recruitment events and post-holiday time offers a great opportunity to go through your address book and call, text, email, facebook/social network and IM everyone you know to tell them to get involved ASAP if they want to change America for the better in 2009.

OH-15: ODP Files FEC Complaint Against Steve Stivers
The Ohio Democratic Party has announced that it has filed a Federal Election Commission complaint against State Sen. Steve Stivers (R-Upper Arlington) and the Ohio Bankers League, an Ohio non-profit corporation, over a June 3rd fundraiser apparently organized by the OBL. Federal election rules prohibit corporations from facilitating or acting as a conduit for contributions, which includes using corporate resources or personnel to plan and carry out fundraisers for federal candidates.
The complaint, which can be downloaded in .pdf format here, has a copy of an invitation to the event attached. The invitation solicits recipients to "join the OBL for an evening" with Stivers and says that the fundraiser is "conducted in conjunction with the OBL CEO symposium," and a form attached to the invitation directs that contributions should be sent to the OBL at its Columbus office.
