Michael Bloomberg Should Not Be Playing Scott Walker To Occupy Wall Street Demonstrators

Mayor Michael Bloomberg's statement that was self-destructive, ignorant and demagogic.

Does he want to argue that Wall Street is where the job-creators hang out? Only if you think their bonuses and golden parachute payments trickle down, and then - - where are the jobs?

Like a misguided dictator, Bloomberg is giving the demonstrators momentum with thoughtless moves and words, just as the movement goes national. Is that his goal?

We saw this in Wisconsin, too.

When his fraudulently named "Budget Repair Bill" was unmasked for the union-stripping measure it really was, and demonstrations broke out in Madison, Gov. Walker mischaracterized the demonstrators as mostly out-of-staters - - a statement rated "false" by PolitiFact.

But...unlike Bloomberg, at least Walker didn't have law enforcement pepper-spray and arrest non-violent people by the hundreds, as has Bloomberg's NYPD.

We know that phosphorus leads to algae contamination of rivers, lakes and wetlands - - and Scott Walker's administration has delayed implementation of new phosphorus controls in a misplaced sop to business that took years among stakeholders to negotiate - -  but now a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee researcher finds a new threat, particularly to users of rural well water:

Phosphorus interacts with soil allowing deadly E. coli bacteria to penetrate groundwater.

From Congressman Martin Heinrich:
We’ve always been proud to be a country that makes things. Our manufacturing tradition has long been a source of both pride and good-paying jobs. Now, at a time when millions are still out of work, it’s our responsibility to build on that tradition to create jobs, strengthen middle class opportunity, and secure our nation’s leading place in the world economy.

Earlier this year, I launched a “Make It In America” tour. I’ve been traveling across central New Mexico meeting with employees and touring small businesses and high-tech manufacturing companies. I’m highlighting how encouraging innovation, manufacturing, and entrepreneurship is creating new jobs at home and growing our economy.

She'll be back at El Rey on Friday, October 7, 2011

Liz Melendez excels as a singer, guitarist, songwriter, performer -- whether it's blues, rock, originals or classics. Liz is a South Valley native whose family has deep roots right here in New Mexico. She grew up listening to all the powerful and diverse stuff of the 60s and 70s played by her dad, both issuing from their stereo at home and the stages of Albuquerque, where her dad played guitar and bass within a vibrant local music scene of that era.

Encouraged and inspired by her dad and his fellow Albuquerque players, she picked up the guitar early in that exciting era of blistering live performances, and set out to be the best -- not just "for a girl guitarist" -- but the best, period. Many believe she succeeded. We're two of them. We're not alone.

Scott Walker's certainly wrong about the dangers of business uncertainty

Risky, but goodRisky, but goodI'm back a third time to talk about the currently fashionable Republican notion (at least, fashionable among Republicans) that reducing business uncertainty is the only real way to fix America's economic woes. Sorry if I seem tiresome and pedantic on this issue, but I really do think it's important and instructive in many ways. This time, I present yet another reason why Scott Walker is certainly wrong about uncertainty

This idea of uncertainty holding back job creatjion is, as I've noted, one that has been adopted wholesale by Walker, as when he commented on the state Department of Revenue's decision to slam small "roll your own" cigaret shops:

"What we hear from employers all the time … is they want the certainty of knowing what the law is, what the rules are, that they're applied universally and across the board."
