Republican convention speeches inspire … even this Democrat

September 3, 2008 by Kenneth

Thanks to a quick-ending meeting of the Miami Beach Democratic Club, I was able to listen on the car radio and get home to watch on TV most of the Republican speeches Tuesday night: Laura Bush, George W. Bush, Fred Thompson and Joe Lieberman.

What a wash of crap!

May I quote the best one-word line from Barack Obama’s acceptance speech in Denver: “Enough!”

But they will not stop. We face nine weeks of this until election day. It will be hard slogging, and few in the news media will step up to contradict the mean-spirited distortions that will be directed at Barack Obama and the inflated praise that will bathe the McCain-Palin ticket.

An example of this wishy-washy media performance on MSNBC a few minutes ago: After the speeches, U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson (R-NM) was interviewed by a floor reporter whose name I didn’t note and she lied blatantly about Obama’s vote on an abortion measure, declaring that he was willing to let “babies die.“ Thanks goodness that Anchor Keith Olbermann came on screen to declare that the issue had been quite different and that Obama had based his vote on the fact that laws already prohibited such an event. And, he declared, he was quite sure that Heather Wilson knew full well that was the case.

In other words, Ms. Wilson may speak with a gentle tone but she lies. Thank you, Keith Olbermann.

Event: Kate Voegele, Virginia Coalition at Bluebird Theater, Tue, Sep 16 9:00p

August 29, 2008 by Steve Hanson

Kate Voegele The musical landscape is teeming with singer/songwriters, many of them quite capable, but only a handful have something truly distinctive to offer. Kate Voegele belongs in the latter category. Don't Look Away, Voegele's first full-length album (MySpace Records), is a revelation, as the 20-year-old writer/singer, belying her tender years, delivers songs of depth and insight with a powerfully seductive voice that maintains a fierce presence amid dynamic rock grooves and infectious pop hooks. Produced by the veteran Marshall Altman (Matt Nathanson, Mark Broussard), Don't Look Away is a bravura effort from an old soul with a youthful spirit; think of her album as a female parallel to John Mayer's Room for Squares*at once a zeitgeist-capturing landmark and the launchpad for a viable career. Voegele, a Cleveland native now in her sophomore year at Miami of Ohio, is no neophyte; indeed, before she'd finished high school, the youngster had notebooks filled with songs and was regularly performing live with the poise of a veteran. Kate was 16 when some rough demos she'd recorded with her father led to an opening slot at a stop on John Mayer and Counting Crows' 2003 shed tour, followed by second-stage appearances in front of Patty Griffin, Aimee Mann and Mindy Smith.

10:58 - There they are folks. Barack Obama and Joe Biden standing together as the Democratic ticket for President and Vice-President.  Their Biden's large family has now joined him on the stage.  Barack is smiling and shaking hands.

WOW. WHAT A NIGHT - ON TO MILE HIGH STADIUM!

10:54 - SENATOR BARACK OBAMA HAS JUST WALKED ON THE STAGE! The crowd is going crazy.  Truly a SURPISE GUEST!

10:42 - Joe Biden has begun to pull out the big guns and is now going for John McCaine, intensely showing how his policies are "just not change, it's more of the same," as the crowd chants.

"These times require more than a good soldier, it requires a wise leader."

He is now detailing what Barack will do to make this a better country saying - "that's the change we need!"

10:32pm - Joe Biden has just accepted the Democratic nomination for the Vice President of the United States.

In a very moving moment, Senator Biden introduces his mom.  He is truly a son who is thankful for the influence of both of his parents.

10:28 -  Joe Biden is coming to the stage with the song "Ain't that America" playing in the background.
