Event: Back2School Tour Presented by University of Phoeni at Bluebird Theater, Tue, Sep 16 8:00p
Kate Voegele The musical landscape is teeming with singer/songwriters, many of them quite capable, but only a handful have something truly distinctive to offer. Kate Voegele belongs in the latter category. Don't Look Away, Voegele's first full-length album (MySpace Records), is a revelation, as the 20-year-old writer/singer, belying her tender years, delivers songs of depth and insight with a powerfully seductive voice that maintains a fierce presence amid dynamic rock grooves and infectious pop hooks. Produced by the veteran Marshall Altman (Matt Nathanson, Mark Broussard), Don't Look Away is a bravura effort from an old soul with a youthful spirit; think of her album as a female parallel to John Mayer's Room for Squares-at once a zeitgeist-capturing landmark and the launchpad for a viable career. Voegele, a Cleveland native now in her sophomore year at Miami of Ohio, is no neophyte; indeed, before she'd finished high school, the youngster had notebooks filled with songs and was regularly performing live with the poise of a veteran. Kate was 16 when some rough demos she'd recorded with her father led to an opening slot at a stop on John Mayer and Counting Crows' 2003 shed tour, followed by second-stage appearances in front of Patty Griffin, Aimee Mann and Mindy Smith.
FL-25: Joe Garcia endorsed by Bob Graham
Some history lessons leap out at you with road signs. Well, today it was a sidewalk sign saying this building in the center of Miami-Dade College was the Dante Fascell Conference Center, and this was where Sen. Bob Graham was going to issue his endorsement of Joe Garcia for Congress in FL-25.
Joe Garcia is fighting to oust Bush rubber-stamp Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, and he was reminded repeatedly during the endorsement ceremony that he has very large shoes to fill since one of his predecessors would be the late Dante Fascell, congressman from South Florida for 38 years until 1993.
Most prominently, said Garcia’s former teacher Patrick Collins, Fascell stood alone as a Southern congressman who refused to sign the racist Southern Manifesto in 1956. That manifesto opposed the 1954 Supreme Court decision mandating an end to school segregation. It must have been like a profile in courage for a first-term Florida congressman to take that stand.
We shall hope fervently for Joe Garcia to be as principled and brave, and Collins suggested it was possible, since the young high school student he taught developed “a zeal to ask penetrating questions and to question long-standing assumptions.”
Annette Taddeo: Red to Blue winner in FL-18
Crossposted from Miami-Dade Dems
Terrific news for Annette Taddeo, our brilliant challenger against a Bush rubber-stamp in Washington. Taddeo now has full backing of the Democratic Party establishment’s Red to Blue program. It was leaked out today on The Politico and the Down with Tyranny blogs. This will mean more funding for her campaign against Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and equal footing with the other Democratic challengers in South Florida, Joe Garcia and Raul Martinez, who have been on the Red to Blue list for some time.
We all can help build momentum in this important race by canvassing for Annette Taddeo, who’s a multiple winner this week – certified also after winning a national contest among progressives to show whose backers would work the hardest.
First, canvassing details for those in South Florida. This event is primarily backed by the Democratic Hispanic Caucus of Florida but everyone’s welcome to join.
