WNPJ's member assembly and awards reception  Saturday, October 8th at the Pyle Center in Madison just got more exciting!
Bad River Tribal Chair Mike Wiggins, right, will join our discussion of "Extreme Mining in Wisconsin."  The tribe strongly opposes the proposed Penokee Hills open pit mine.

Member assembly

WNPJ's member assembly runs from 11 am to 2:30 pm, and includes lunch.  Registration is $20 for WNPJ members, $25 for non-members, and can be paid at the door. We'll open with a "State of the Network" report and WNPJ's proposed budget and Board slate for 2012.
Then we'll view "Keepers of the Water," on the grassroots uprising against the Crandon sulfide mine, followed by a stellar panel on "Extreme Mining in Wisconsin":  Professor and author Al Gedicks, Bad River Tribal Chair Mike Wiggins and Jessica Koski of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community on Eagle Rock in Michigan.

Awards reception

WNPJ's awards reception runs from 2:30 to 5 pm, hosted by the ACLU's Stacy Harbaugh.  Donations are appreciated, and all are welcome!

We'll honor WNPJ's Peacemakers of the Year: Christian Pacheco of Racine, Tony Shultz of Athens, and Dr. Judith L. Ladinsky of Madison, followed by a special recognition of Dennis Bergren's LGBT advocacy.

Then we'll join voices for a mini-Solidarity Sing-Along, before awarding WNPJ co-founder and "Fighting 14" member Senator Fred Risser with our Lifetime Achievement Award!  Ed Garvey will be introducing Senator Risser.

We're honored to be ending the day with Native American activist, environmentalist, democracy advocate and  author Winona LaDuke, who will speak about the choices before us:  "Militarism, Mining or Living?"
