2012 Weather a Clone of 2011?

October 20, 2011 by Left in Alabama

The National Weather Association conference in Hover Alabama began yesterday and concludes today. It's looking like we're not going to get enough time to lick our wounds from the brutal weather of 2011 before we have to endure more of the same.

Wedding ringsThe Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has filed a class action lawsuit challenging a policy of 53 probate offices across Alabama that deny undocumented individuals and United States citizens whose intended spouse is undocumented their constitutional right to marry

New Republican Trend: Secret Town Halls

October 19, 2011 by Left in Alabama

I'll bet Mo Brooks (R, AL-05) and Mike Rogers (R, AL-03) wish they'd come up with this method to avoid difficult questions from constituents ...

GOP Rep. Asked Paper To Keep Town Hall Secret, Selected Residents Who Were Invited

The reason for not publishing an advance notice of the meeting was the fear that people from outside the immediate area could come and “just yell” at the congresswoman “whatever’s on their minds,” Bowman said Friday.

“When word gets in the paper, you get a certain set of people,” Bowman said.

People coming to tell their representatives "whatever's on their minds," huh?  How unpleasant that must be for Congresscritters whose job approval rating is barely in double digits.

Vote the bums out!

Failed GOP Prediction: Get Rid of Hispanics and American Workers Will Fill Those Jobs

October 19, 2011 by Left in Alabama

Fruits of Alabama Immigration BillAll our local Republicans predicted that passing HB56 would make everything come up roses for Alabama.  If we just make the "illegal" workers leave the state, then American citizens will start lining up to fill their shoes.

Senator (and HB56 sponsor) Scott Beason (R):

"This is a jobs bill. We have a problem with an illegal workforce that displaces Alabama workers. We need to put those people back to work. That's the No.1 priority"

HB56 sponsor Rep. Micky Hammon (R):

”This is a jobs-creation bill for Americans"

Roy Moore Wants a Re-Do as Chief Justice

October 19, 2011 by Left in Alabama

He's baaaaaaacccck!  Former Chief Justice Roy Moore was removed from office in 2003 for being a self-righteous asshole refusing to abide by a federal judge's order to remove his 5,280-lb. graven image of the Ten Commandments (the second of which prohibits graven images) from public display in the state judicial building.

Now he's "seriously considering" running to regain that office.

Judge Roy Moore said Tuesday he's seriously considering running again for chief justice eight years after being kicked out of the job for refusing to remove a Ten Commandments monument.

Moore, 64, told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview that lots of people have encouraged him to enter the Republican primary and he expects to decide by Jan. 1.

That sound you hear?  It's me retching.

Let us not forget that this is the man who wrote in reference to LGBT people:

Notes on the Occupation

October 19, 2011 by Left in Alabama

I suspect I am not the only American who watched the sudden, surprising upheavals of the Arab Spring with a small twinge of envy.  Here were ordinary people like us who had finally reached that moment of “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore”.  They woke up, out of the blue, and began the process of transforming their societies.  Like the dismantling of the Berlin Wall,  events unfolded in a way that seemed almost peripheral to the years of painstaking, elaborate diplomatic and political efforts that preceded them.  How simple it appeared—just wake up and smell the coffee, just put your foot down for once, just get a life.

Like many progressives, I was jealous of the Tea Party for being able to motivate such strong and vivid support in our own country and wondered how on earth we could get that same energy stirred up in our folks.  We have plenty of data and reason to go on, but we have lately lacked passion.

GOP Gambling Money: Mike Hubbard Thinks Alabama Just Fell Off The Turnip Wagon

October 19, 2011 by Left in Alabama

Mike HubbardIs Republican House Speaker Mike Hubbard (R) a Simpleton or a Liar?

OK, wrong question.  Try this one: How stupid does Mike Hubbard (R) think Alabama is?

Answer: Pretty darned stupid.  In fact, Hubbard must think the whole state of Alabama just fell off the turnip wagon if he expects us to swallow his line of BS about Alabama Republicans not taking any contributions from gambling sources.

The Poarch Band of Creek Indians (they're the folks with the big gaming operations in Atmore, Wetumpka and Montgomery) gave the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) $350,000 last year ($100,000 in July and $250,000 in October) and another $200,000 in early 2011.

The RSLC's Alabama PAC gave $850,000 to the Alabama Republican Party in 2010, $373,000 to the Republican "136 years PAC" and $50,000 to Mike Hubbard's own "Network PAC."

GOP Contenders In A Single Word

October 19, 2011 by Left in Alabama

The WaPo asked Americans to describe the 2012 GOP frontrunners in a single word

      Herman Cain -- "999"
      Rick Perry -- "Texas"
      Mitt Romney -- "Mormon"

The WaPo graphic shows no positive words got more than 10 mentions for Perry.  Looking at the full results of the Pew/WaPo survey, a few items caught my eye.

•  "Liar/lies" or "crook/crooked" --which were tabulated separately in the survey -- came up for all the Republicans:

  • Cain --11
  • Perry -- 14
  • Romney -- 9

•  7 people said "A**" is the first word that comes to mind when they think of Rick Perry and 6 people said "Bush."

•  A total of 13 people think of Mitt Romney as "boring" or "dull."  "Loser" is the first word that springs to mind for another 4.

•  "Competent" (8 people) was only mentioned in connection with Romney.

Committee On Church Cooperation Says Undocumented Won't Be Denied Help

October 19, 2011 by Left in Alabama

The Board of Morgan County's Committee on Church Cooperation held a public meeting last night to reaffirm that the organization's purpose ...

... “is to build cooperative efforts among the churches of Morgan County to provide emergency and short-term assistance to persons in need, in the name of Jesus Christ.” The sole basis on which assistance will be offered will continue to be (and always has been) CCC’s assessment of an individual’s physical needs.”

They also rolled out the welcome mat for people in need, even if they lack documents:

“If somebody has been denied service, bring them back,” said board member Sam Janis. “If there are undocumented individuals, bring them in. Bring a translator with you, and we’ll do the very best that we can. There is no intent to exclude people from service.”
