Failed GOP Prediction: Get Rid of Hispanics and American Workers Will Fill Those Jobs

October 19, 2011 by Left in Alabama

Fruits of Alabama Immigration BillAll our local Republicans predicted that passing HB56 would make everything come up roses for Alabama.  If we just make the "illegal" workers leave the state, then American citizens will start lining up to fill their shoes.

Senator (and HB56 sponsor) Scott Beason (R):

"This is a jobs bill. We have a problem with an illegal workforce that displaces Alabama workers. We need to put those people back to work. That's the No.1 priority"

HB56 sponsor Rep. Micky Hammon (R):

”This is a jobs-creation bill for Americans"

Mo Brooks Has a Tough Time At Town Hall

October 18, 2011 by Left in Alabama

Mo Brooks wanted people to come to his town hall meeting and they did.  Not just members of the South Huntsville Civic Association either, but also Occupy Huntsville participants and other skeptics of Mo's brand supply side economic "conservatism."

Mo Brooks town hall meeting gets tense at times

"There won't be any protesting, we have no signs," said Mark Jones, an engineer from Huntsville who brought a list of questions for the group to ask. "We don't want a fight. We want a level playing field."

...

The first woman in line asked why the government does not close corporate tax loopholes, allowing Brooks to make his oft-repeated point that increasing taxes on businesses and the wealthy hurts jobs.

When the woman began to press her point, the crowd grew noisy, with some shouting "Next!" to get her to step away from the microphone. That scene repeated itself several times throughout the evening as some in line challenged Brooks on his answers.

Mo Brooks Wants You At His Town Hall Today!

October 17, 2011 by Left in Alabama

Via email from Mo Brooks:

Next Monday I’ll be holding a Town Hall in conjunction with the South Huntsville Civic Association, and I hope you'll come out for the event.

When: Monday October 17, from 7 to 9:00 PM

Where: Grissom High School Auditorium, 7901 Bailey Cove Rd., Huntsville

Since Mo's holding his Town Hall in conjunction with the South Huntsville Civic Association, I suspect he's really catering to more conservative residents ... but he needs to hear from the rest of us too.  You might ask him what happened to all jobs legislation Republicans promised ... and why he voted "Yes" on the Let Women Die Act last week.

Scare Tactic Backfire: No Confidence in Republicans On Deficit

September 27, 2011 by Left in Alabama

Last week my neighbor was asked to take an automated phone survey on "the deficit crisis."  Ho hum, huh?  We live in Mo Brooks' district and no matter what our Congressman is asked, he manages to work "" into his response so we hear a lot about it.  Everyone hears it since Republican rhetoric has elevated the issue to the level of "existential threat."  The twist on this particular phone survey is that my friend was offered A FREE CRUISE (absolutely FREE except for a few minor "fees") for taking the survey.  We laughed about how the Republicans have hit rock bottom with their talking point when they have to bribe folks to take their surveys.

Shorter Mo Brooks: We Got Ours

September 26, 2011 by Left in Alabama

Congressional Republicans have been using the FEMA Disaster Relief Fund as a political football.  Now there's a real possibility of a government shutdown because they've insisted on budget resolutions that either don't replenish the FEMA fund or cut fuel efficiency programs to offset disaster relief funding.  Amazingly, even Republicans (like those from Alabama) representing areas recently been struck by natural disasters and receiving FEMA aid are opposed to funding FEMA.

Now Mo Brooks (R, AL-05) offers a window onto the thinking of such Republicans, essentially "We already got ours, screw everybody else!"

U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks (R) said most of the FEMA money for north Alabama storm victims had already been distributed, minimizing the local impact of any potential shutdown.
