McCain Doesn't Get It: Bottom-up versus Top-down
In John McCain's speech the other night, he tried to pull what he thought was a Barack Obama.
You well know I've been called a maverick, someone who...
... someone who marches to the beat of his own drum. Sometimes it's meant as a compliment; sometimes it's not. What it really means is I understand who I work for. I don't work for a party. I don't work for a special interest. I don't work for myself. I work for you.
Let's first agree that, aside from the lies peppered throughout the statement, it's a good one. McCain is saying that he's embracing a servant leadership model when it comes to leading Americans. Parties, special interests, and anything else that gets in the way of people -- phooey on them. I work for you, and as a result, you'll be the direct beneficiary when I get things done in office. McCain sees Obama's message of bottom-up change working and so he wants to own a piece of it as well.
Black Congressman Charlie Rangel caught with his hands in the cookie jar
I guess Charlie Rangel is like so many other politicians, black and white, these days. They like making deals for themselves and forget about the people getting gentrified out of their own communities. I had a lot of respect for Mr. Rangel over the years, until he defended George Bush and supported Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama. Now, if reports are right about him in the NY Times, I'm done with him and so many other members of the Congressional Black, um, (Fox) Caucus.
Check out this New York Times article about the loan that was given to him by the resort development company, in which Theodore Kheel, a prominent New York labor lawyer, was a principal investor.
Young Republicans Tackle Age and Race
These are two of my new friends. Princella and Richard, who, despite their republicanism are remarkable young leaders. Wednesday, I met with many of the Young Republicans in the party who can't help but notice that the stereotypes of old, white, men are more valid than they would like.
Leaders from the popular youth blog HipHopRepublican.com sat down with me to talk about opportunities that their party could harness if they were only willing to do the kind of outreach that Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama's campaign does.
The young people all have ambitions to achieve goals or run for office, but they are fighting an uphill battle in a tough establishment world. Its the one thing that we as young democrats share with them. Their optimism reigns supreme, however, and they push mountains in efforts to move their party to something a little more mainstream or at the very least reflective of the 21st Century.
