So projected service cuts for 2012,  in a tough economy, will be harmful.

Confidence-Builder Up North? - - "Responsible Mining" Endorsed

The Ashland County Board endorses "responsible mining."

That's how you protect the Lake Superior watershed?

Isn't responsible [open pit, for 20 miles, on pristine land] mining a little like "clean coal" or "low-tar cigarettes" or "low-fat potato chips?"

And as the State Legislature gets set to again take up fast-tracked permitting by a DNR deliberately turned pro-business by Scott Walker, is anyone reading the US Army Corps of Engineers warning against short-cutting state mining reviews?

Remember that Walker said he wanted someone running the DNR with "a chamber of commerce mentality."

How's about instead some responsible oversight, responsible policy-making, responsible stewardship, etc?

Waukesha's Great Lakes Diversion Plan Adds A Willing Town

Delafield says, "OK," but the Town of Waukesha has yet to be heard from.

We'll see if the other Great Lakes states approve of boot-strapping non-applicant communities into an application - -  on the strength of a map and service territory that never had a hearing when drawn up by a non-elected regional planning commission.

There is no question the city of Madison has educated, hard-working and dedicated employees, but we can also celebrate their athletic ability and comittment needed to compete in the recent Ironman. The training that proceeds a 2.4-mile swim, 112 miles on a bike and then a 26.2-mile marathon is incredible and I salute everyone who participated. It was another great opportunity to showcase our city. The Greater Madison Convention and Visitors Bureau did another excellent job in accommodating the thousands...

A Jobs Plan For Milwaukee: Guest Post By John Kovari

John Kovari, a previous essayist on this blog, is a Ph.D candidate in American Politics (Urban Politics) and Public Administration at UW-M, and is employed as a Research Assistant at the UW-M Center for Urban Initiatives & Research. He's also a former City of Milwaukee aldermanic staffer and Mayoral office intern.

By now we have all heard about President Obama’s new jobs plan, a combination of tax cuts and stimulus projects.  Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett recently endorsed this proposal and has called on Congress to quickly pass the plan.

But Mayor Barrett can do more than just urge Congress to pass the bill via a press conference.  He can and should enact a Milwaukee jobs plan.

The plan does not need to be complex.  Simply double the City’s capital budget and build, build, build.

Accelerated infrastructure investment is sound economics.  Even conservative economists note how important infrastructure investment is for a growing economy (see Gramlich 1994).

Headline: Former Walker aide Archer says she has done nothing wrong

A former top aide to Gov. Scott Walker said in a sharply worded email Thursday that "I have done absolutely nothing wrong" in connection with an FBI raid of her Madison home. -- Journal Sentinel.

So what makes Cindy Archer a "former" top aide to Walker?  She is still on the state payroll, albeit it in a slight less visible job which pays somewhat less than deputy of DOA.

There's no "former" about it.  She is still a key player in Walker's administration.  Wallker does not deserve a pass.

UPDATE:  It turns out that all Walker knows is what he reads in the papers, too, he says:

Obviously, we'll be paying attention if anything more comes up, but what I know personally right now is what I've seen and read published in papers or on media reports. - Gov. Scott Walker, asked about his knowledge surrounding a search of the home of his former aide.

If he doesn't know any more, it's because he doesn't want to know and is being careful not to ask any questions.

The man earns another "mostly false."

The pattern continues.
