"Save Lives! Stop the Bullying!" Event in Huntsville Thursday, 10/20

October 17, 2011 by Left in Alabama

North Alabama's GLBT Advocacy & Youth Services organization is partnering with Equality Alabama in an community event to promote awareness & prevent bullying of all types.  The event will also remember the teens & young adults who have committed suicide after being bullied.

In many cases these youth have been bullied due to their perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.  After a rash of youth suicides in 2010 led to the creation of the "It Gets Better" campaign, various organizations began to focus on the problem of bullying and raise awareness with vigils held throughout the country.

On Thursday, the community will gather to remind these teens that they have options beyond suicide.  There are places where they will be loved, supported, and safe.

Republican Voter Suppression - Mike Huckabee Edition

October 17, 2011 by Left in Alabama

Republicans have passed laws that could keep more than 5 million Americans from voting in the next election, but just changing laws to suppress voter turnout isn't always enough.  Sometimes the GOP needs a little underhanded or even illegal activity to keep winning elections.  Mike Huckabee goes there, suggesting supporters of anti-union Issue 2 in Ohio should do whatever it takes to win ...

“Make a list…  Call them and ask them, ‘Are you going to vote on Issue 2 and are you going to vote for it?’  If they say no, well, you just make sure that they don’t go vote.  Let the air out of their tires on election day.  Tell them the election has been moved to a different date.  That’s up to you how you creatively get the job done.”

Voter suppression -- that's how Republicans win elections.  They're no longer even pretending they need to keep it legal.

When people vote, progressive candidates and ideas win.  Are you registered to vote?
