Do Capitol arrests advance our cause?

Thursday night, after 13 people were arrested in a State Capitol protest, I asked a simple question on my Facebook page:  How does this advance our cause?

Three days and 54 comments later, that debate still rages.  And there are some very thoughtful, insightful comments from people who took the question seriously.

i cannot figure out how to link directly to that post, but if you go to the and scroll down, it was posted Thursday at 8:36 p.m.

Your comments, here or there, are welcome.

*IS* Mike DeWine still running for Ohio Attorney General?

September 18, 2009 by buckeyestateblog

To jump off of David's post about the ORP Central Committee NOT issuing an endorsement in the race, let me proposal a hypothesis as to why besides the angst he causes the conservative base in the party:  there's a real practical concern whether DeWine is a serious candidate.

In the two months since he announced, DeWine's campaign website has not been changed since it was created to announce his candidacy.  His campaign Facebook page has had no activity since the week following his announcments.  There was no response at all from DeWine on the newstory about the ORP Central Committee non-endorsement.  I've been unable to find any published reports of DeWine speaking to local civic or Republican groups.

In other words, since his announcment, I can find no evidence that a DeWine for Attorney General campaign actually exists today or not.  Now, even if the campaign DOES exist, wouldn't the fact that DeWine's announcement (which was not exactly WELCOMED or embraced by the ORP... family relationship be damned).  I mean Voinovich, Kasich, and Portman all worked with DeWine in the Senate.  And have you seen any sign that they're extending any support to his candidacy?  None of them even issued statements, let alone appeared, at DeWine's announcement?

Bleg for a feminist web developer

was started, I am pleased to report, by a reader in response to the anti-abortion 40 days for life campaign, which begins next week. If you have web skills and are interested in helping out, they really need someone to help them put together a "sponsor a picketer" page--email la4choice [at] gmail [dot] com if you're willing to help (pro bono--this is pretty much two women working their asses off here).

If you're not a web developer but are pro-choice and interested, read on.
Dear Friends,

On May 31st of this year, abortion provider Dr. George Tiller was shot to death in his church. His murderer has told the AP that he knows there are "many other similar events planned around the country as long as abortion remains legal."

Now, on the heels of this tragedy, Operation Rescue is mobilizing for what they boast will be "the largest, most widespread coordinated pro-life outreach ever." From September 23rd through November 1st, anti-choice activists will descend upon women's health clinics nationwide for a campaign of harassment and obstruction.

Who Said Anything About Botox, We're Talking Healthcare Reform

Just a day after Erica Williams tried to set the record straight about young people and healthcare, we get this POLITICO piece entitled, "Young adults sit on sidelines of health debate." This title is a real shame, because the article chronicles many noble efforts by young leaders and organizations in working on healthcare reform. It's as if POLITICO came to the piece with the perspective that young people are not involved, instead of investigating the rich involvement on the ground and online. Like, the opposite of journalism. At any rate, what POLITICO may be getting at is that young people aren't visible to older Americans. Fair enough, but that's a two-way street. Erica wrote a great commentary on CNN.com, which is totally read by older Americans. She explains that young people don't want to get involved in the theater of politics.

Young people were such a vital force during the election, not simply because of their own voting turnout but because of their ability to reach out to their elders and persuade them. And what could be more needed now?

There You Go Again, Sarah Palin

August 21, 2009 by natchezblog

Sarah Palin, the health care expert, is continuing to share her wisdom. She writes on her Facebook page that the plan making its way through Congress will "inevitably" lead to health care rationing. Palin claims the president wants to enact a rationing system that would

"refuse to allocate medical resources to the elderly, the infirm, and the disabled who have less economic potential."
