Separate but equal, presumably

Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker wants to split Milwaukee Public Schools into 10 to 12 smaller, autonomous school districts, the news media report. Swell idea. There could be eight African American districts, two Latino districts, and two all-white districts, given the makeup of the current MPS enrollment and the city's housing patterns. Or maybe Walker forgot to mention that he'd like to do a lot of busing,

Cherry picking poll data to make your case look better is nothing new - - I own up to it and I want to also note it when a unit of government goes down that narrow road.

In this case, it's the Waukesha Water Utility, which sent out through its public relations people last Friday a news release about its Lake Michigan water diversion and return flow plans.

In the release - - linked here - - Waukesha says a recent poll showed that 68% of respondents supported the diversion plan as long as it returned the water to the lake.

State’s Two Largest Newspapers Change Grover Norquist from a “Zealot” to an “Advocate,” “Activist”

Apparently, some editing gremlins at both the Wisconsin State Journal and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel feel confident that anti-tax zealot Grover Norquist is not an “anti-tax zealot.” So much so they edited the description of “zealot” from Saturday’s Associated Press story from this weekend’s round-up of the teabaggers’ latest “Republican Rally for Failure” held in the Wisconsin Dells.

Can you say 'arms dealer?'

Neil Shively, retired Capitol bureau chief of the old Milwaukee Sentinel, writes a "Where are they now?" piece for WisPolitics.com every now and then. Recently featured was ex-US Sen. Robert Kasten. Shively treats him kindly:

Bob Kasten is still in Washington, however -- and in New York City, and Egypt and the Middle East. And he's still a major player, though now in the field of defense contracting using lessons he learned in the Senate. Heard of Oshkosh Corp.'s bonanza with billions in defense contracts? Well, Kasten helped stimulate deals for Oshkosh with foreign nations, such as Egypt.

“My business is not so much a lobbying business. When I was in the Senate, I was chairman of the sub-committee on foreign operations, security and economics,” he said, offering the path to his business today. “We (the U.S.) give large numbers of military and economic aid … $1 billion to Egypt, for example.“So I work for U.S. businesses and try to help them sell to Egypt and other countries in the Middle East,” he said.

What does that business sound like to you?
