For the latest Remembering Women’s History month post, I wanted to focus on this article I found about the health of Latina women in Arizona. As most of us know, Arizona is a notoriously unfriendly state for immigrants in general and immigrant women specifically. It is the state that has enacted some of the harshest anti-immigrant laws and, of course, has Sheriff Joe as well.
But all the anti-immigrant hysteria has led to some terrifying consequences for immigrant women. Namely in the form of their health. When a woman who is in the country without documentation gets cancer, what does she do?
In Arizona, the answer is rarely “she gets treatment.”

Angering news coming out of Brooklyn. About a week ago a Latino was physically attacked as he walked out of a bar by another group of Latinos yelling homophobic slurs at him.
From the N.Y. Daily News:
The attackers, who were also Latinos, called the victim a “f—-t” and punched him numerous times in the face, knocking him down and causing him to suffer a gash on the back of his head, police sources said.

I watched this video about women farm workers with a lot of pride and interest. They have been organizing against the sexual harassment a seventeen year old girl was subjected to and the retaliation experienced by those organizing against the abuse. The video is of these organizers turning in a petition signed by over 16,000 people showing support for the workers.

This from VL amiga Angeline Hassell:
Hello All,
There is a growing epidemic that is spreading at unexpected speeds……Domestic Violence! The people who are most affected by this are women and children.
I myself for one happen to be a woman and I happen to also be a victim of domestic violence which is why I started this petition.

Despite crime being at an all-time low in the Big Apple, stop and frisks are at an all time high & guess who gets stopped and frisked the most?
A total of 575,304 people were stopped and questioned in 2009 – an 8% increase over the previous high of 531,159 in 2008, the NYPD said Tuesday…
The NYPD was required under a 2001 law to report data on those stopped, questioned and frisked.
Of those stopped in 2009, roughly 57% were frisked, 6% were arrested, and another 6.2% received summonses. Blacks and Latinos were the subject of roughly 87% of the stops in 2009.
The practice of these stop and frisk operations are nothing new. They grew under the Giuliani administration and continued to be used because they were touted as a huge part of the huge drop in crime in NYC. Never mind that crime was dropping nation-wide, in large part due to the decline of crack cocaine. Crime continues to fall and yet stop and frisks are up with low actual arrest rates.
