Democracy for New Mexico
The national group Democracy for America has endorsed Democratic State Rep. Ben Rodefer for his re-election bid in New Mexico House District 23 in Corrales. DFA Chair Jim Dean, the brother of Howard Dean who originally founded the organization, announced yesterday that Rep. Rodefer has been named a DFA New Mexico All-Star based on the votes of members. Go Ben!
Albuquerque's DFA-Democracy for New Mexico Meetup group (DFA-DFNM) is loosely affiliated with Democracy for America and has been since 2003. On behalf of the group, Mary Ellen and I would like to congratulate Rep. Rodefer on being voted DFA's New Mexico All-Star and urge everyone to contribute or volunteer for Ben's campaign. Rep. Rodefer is in a hotly contested race this year and it's important that we help him keep his seat.
State Rep. Ben Rodefer is going to be getting some help from a national organization in his re-election bid. The progressive group Democracy for America (DFA) announced today that Rodefer is their "New Mexico All-Star."
In an e-mail to DFA supporters, DFA chair Jim Dean (brother of Howard Dean. Howard Dean founded the group) wrote:
DFA endorsements have always been driven by our members on the ground across the country -- that's what makes Democracy for America the country's only people-powered PAC. But the New Mexico All-Star endorsement is different because it's chosen entirely by DFA members in New Mexico.
All the votes have been cast and I'm honored to announce DFA's New Mexico All-Star -- Ben Rodefer.
The e-mail also quoted Rodefer on how and why he is running his campaign. "We need state leaders who are not afraid to stand up for the working people, leaders who will not be swayed by those with great wealth or influence, but will stick to tirelessly advocating for democratic values and positions," Rodefer said.
Rodefer is in a tough seat that he won off of a Republican, the late Rep. Eric Youngberg. The Republican-leaning seat will be one targeted by Republicans in what they see as a Republican wave year nationwide.

Dr. Howard Dean of Democracy for America has a diary up right now on Daily Kos discussing health care reform and explaining how we have the votes NOW to pass a good bill with a strong public option.
I'm sure you'll agree that Dean has been a superb advocate for real reform and a robust public option. He's asking us to join him now in demanding that Democrats in Congress move forward and vote to do what's right for America. No excuses.
Go read (and rec) the diary, add your comment to the thread and visit his new America Can't Wait action site at www.americacantwait.com/ to sign the petition and learn how you can get more involved.
This is a tough post to write. Almost five years ago, I was frustrated with the scope and quality of political news in Pennsylvania. I had just graduated college and was temping while I waited to start graduate school.
I decided to dust off my rusty HTML skills and start a new website. After brainstorming with some friends, we decided it would be called Keystone Politics - designed to directly compete with PoliticsPA (as if that's a surprise). This was during Howard Dean's heyday, when we were just beginning to see the potential of the internet as a tool to facilitate political discussion. Every day for five years, we've done our best to bring a unique perspective to Pennsylvania politics.
So it's with a heavy heart that I have to inform you that Friday was Keystone Politics' final day of publication.
My first post, which I'll never forget, was about former state Senator Vince Fumo vacationing for years on a yacht owned by the Independence Seaport Museum. When their yacht (and really, what museum has a yacht?) was in drydock for repairs, Fumo demanded they lease him another one. It's tough to vacation in Martha's Vineyard without a yacht. It was clear then that Fumo was a corrupt bastard, but little did I know that five years later, the story would still be going strong.
