After months of complaining about the size of the federal deficit, the deficit hawks in Congress have a chance to do something to stop the deficit from increasing. That would be to not extend the Bush-era tax cuts.
Talking Points Memo digs into a Congressional Budget Office report on the tax cuts and their effect on the deficit over the next ten years:
They crow about deficits, but Republicans want to make the whole batch permanent, for a total cost of $3.8 trillion over 10 years. Democratic leaders on the Hill and in the White House, however, want to preserve most of the cuts, too, and just let the tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans expire. That would still increase deficits by about $3.1 trillion over 10 years -- not as fiscally responsible as they'd have you believe. Even if Democrats get their way, in other words, there will still be revenue shortfalls as far as the eyes can see.
I think that I can safely say that there is absolutely no chance that all of the Bush-era tax cuts will be allowed to expire.

Just in case you didn't know, Meg Whitman has a lot of money. Her gigantic pile of money includes that she which made from eBay and her little dalliance with Goldman Sachs. Heck, even Steve Poizner thought it was skeezy. But, at this point, she doesn't see any reason whatsoever to stop making every effort to purchase the governor's gig. And why not, $104 million is really only a down payment, and it's just one step away from the White House, her intended destination anyway.
So, she really doesn't need any added financial resources, but why the heck not?
Days after California's political watchdog agency said it would not crack down on issue advocacy ads until after the Nov.
Considering that the United States is pretty clearly split more or less evenly on ideological grounds, while polls repeatedly show that Americans — even many right-of-center ones — favor health care reform, same-sex marriage, and other so-called “liberal” ideas, it’s somewhat puzzling to me that the Radical Right still controls so much of what we see and hear on a daily basis. In the past — the ever-more-distant past — the minority would be able to state their positions, but more often than not a pat on the head and a “that’s nice, dear” would be about the only response needed. In 2009, though, the minority controls nearly every major media outlet and their often-insane rantings (against ACORN, gay rights, and the Scary Black Man in the White House, among others) not only are given credibility, but indeed they get their way far more often than they should (why the President is even giving them the time of day on ACORN is beyond me — so much for socialism).
I was wondering how long it would take for this to happen
when I saw the story that the Obama Administration does not want NY Governor David Patterson to run for re-election. Michael Steele responded to that news on Face the Nation this morning
bringing Governor Corzine into the debate as a contrast: "It raises a curious point for me. I think Gov. Paterson's numbers are about the same as Gov. Corzine's. The president is with Gov.
