Obama on Iraq

September 9, 2008 by Jack and Jill P...

Earlier today, Obama responded to President Bush’s announcement on Iraq . . .

Obama’s Policy on Iraq (the following can be found at barackobama.com):

In 2002, as the conventional thinking in Washington lined up with President Bush for war, Obama had the judgment and courage to speak out against going to war, and to warn of “an occupation of undetermined length, with undetermined costs, and undetermined consequences.” He is fully committed to ending the war in Iraq as president. Obama remarks on Bush's troop redeployments

September 9, 2008 by admin

From the Obama campaign:
Good morning. I’d like to comment on the President’s speech. First, let me acknowledge the extraordinary and courageous work that our troops have done in both Iraq and Afghanistan. They have performed brilliantly under extremely difficult circumstances.

Today, President Bush announced very modest troop redeployments from Iraq. Meanwhile, we will continue to keep nearly 140,000 troops in Iraq while our military is overstretched, which is still at pre-surge levels. We will continue to spend $10 billion a month in Iraq while the Iraqi government sits on a $79 billion surplus. In the absence of a timetable to remove our combat brigades, we will continue to give Iraq’s leaders a blank check instead of pressing them to reconcile their differences. So the President’s talk of “return on success” is a new name for continuing the same strategic mistake that has dominated our foreign policy for over 5 years. -

The biggest problem in Iraq today. . .

September 6, 2008 by Blue Virginia

is the lack of political will to do what needs to be done to ensure peace.  The Sons of Iraq were extremely important to the military gains of the surge and now they are being targeted by the Iraqi Government.

The gains made by our brave service men and women are precarious at best, the Iraqi Government's targeting of the Sons of Iraq is only an example of the larger problem.  The problem is a direct result of this administration's failed policy to only pursue a military solution to the war.  A policy might I add that is supported by the Republican candidate for the presidency (I am unsure if the Republicans VP candidate can even comprehend the policy but I'm sure she emphatically defends it).

Obama v. McCain on the Issues: Ending the War Responsibly

September 5, 2008 by MOMocrats

After all the lies we heard coming out of the RNC, and since the Republicans had their chance yet choose not to talk about REAL ISSUES for an entire week, let's take a closer look at the differences between Obama and McCain's policies that affect working families most.

ISSUE: ENDING THE WAR RESPONSIBLY

BARACK OBAMA

  • Obama Will Work With Commanders On The Ground In Iraq To Responsibly Redeploy U.S. Troops. Barack Obama believes we must be as careful getting out of Iraq as we were careless getting in. Immediately upon taking office, Obama will give his Secretary of Defense and military commanders a new mission in Iraq: ending the war. The removal of our troops will be responsible and phased, directed by military commanders on the ground and done in consultation with the Iraqi government. Military experts believe we can safely redeploy combat brigades from Iraq at a pace of 1 to 2 brigades a month that would remove them in 16 months.
